Oh! Interesting, that means that's where mine is too, I assumed heater core leak on mine too buy maybe it's the valve!

He's got an early 740 without air-con, this means the heater valve is in the passenger compartment, drivers side of the centre console feeding straight into the heater matrix.

They are quite prone to leaking in theis area for some reason whereas the underbonnet mounted heater valves seem to survive better for some reason.
Maybe the underbonnet valves are made to a higher standard of quality.

Any idea if these are the same as the ones in the 900 series?

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/UOcAA...uVY/s-l300.jpg

Look a little something like this, with the valve actuation arm a seperate pull off part.

If so 1 - i swapped mine for a generic brass boden cable valve and it worked a treat (this is availible as i'm breaking the car)

2 - I have a new one somewhere in my garage (found a new old stock one somewhere for sale after i'd fitted my brass one) I could try and dig it out but atm my garage looks like a huricane tore through a jumble sale...

Yep, mines down next to the clutch pedal.

I'll have a look for a golf one, that looks good and a viable solution.

I understand that a.n.other has just done the valve fix using the Golf Mk1 valve with a couple of slight but obvious mods.

I don't think anybody on here has done it .... yet.

The only additional comment I can make is that apparently you have to reduce the length of both the inlet and outlet pipes slightly and insert a piece of stiffener tube in them to strengthen the plastic of the remaining inlet and outlet to allow the jubilee clips to be tightened down.

It all seems quite feasible and a matter of adapting things and pipework to fit as you go along.
