Default Engine temperature fluctuation

Hi

I’ve a 2005 1.8 petrol V50 95,000 miles

I live rural so I’d very rarely have to stop in traffic

I was stopped today and the engine temperature gauge was between 3.5 to 4 on the gauge , when I was stopped it went to half way and not any higher

Is this correct or do I have an issue with a fan/ thermostat ?

I would say you need to replace the thermostat, the temp needle should be at 12 o'clock all the time when the car is at optimal temperature around 20mins of running or so, make sure you get a genuine volvo thermostat, not sure about your engine but on the t5 it is a pig of a job.

Regards

MAny modern cars use electric fans to cool when staionary / slow moving . It is common for temperate to rise & fall in these circumstances , due to fan switching on & off . You may simply have never noticed before , but now it's piqued your interest & you notice far more
