Its all a combination of matters to reach strong mileages.
Firstly the car needs to be a decent one off the factory line, not something that got pushed through at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon. Then, the car's mechanical and electrics need to be robust and not fragile. The car needs an owner who can happily spend money on upkeep, do competent DIY and also use garages/mechanics where they know what they are doing. Then the owner needs to be someone who doesn't just start a car up and rag it from cold. Nothing wrong with using an engine but, do so sensibly. I'm not on par with that mileage but, as an example, for the last 10 years I have been doing 900-1,000 miles a week. Firstly in my Silver C70 T5 for 5 years, before making that my mums daily driver. Then in my second C70 T5 which is my daily. (These eliminated a 03' Jaguar XKR and 2001 BMW M5 and E36 328i from my stable). Typically in 1 year, the car was serviced at an independent 4 times. Annual gearbox oil changes. Around 150,000 miles see's a new radiator requirement and suspension overhauls. I tried a new 2010 E350 CDI and 2013 Astra GTC diesel on lease deals and went back to the old Volvo's! My independent Volvo mentioned, a couple of years ago, when the Silver C70 hit around 240,000 miles and had a new VVT thing costing around £400 for the part plus labour, that, people would usually scrap a car at this point. My comment was, its cheaper to spend £400-600 on a car that doesn't use or leak oil between services, drives and feels better new cars, doesn't ever break down than, buy something else that cannot do the same.

I had an 03 V70 D5 which had around 630K miles on it when I sold it about 3 years ago. The previous owner had been a chauffeur using the car for airport runs etc.
It was on its original engine, the auto box had been changed at 400K, and was on its 5th service book. It had been serviced every 6 months Max. I think the key was the long motorway journeys - which these engines lap up. My present 05 V70 D5 (163 again) I have had for just over year, and has just popped over 250K. You would think it has done half the mileage and the 10K miles I have done it have been a pleasure. When I read the advert for the car, the previous owner (who had the car for 13 years from when it was a year old) mentioned that he had used the car daily for a 100 mile motorway commute. Extensive service history. It was an easy decision to buy it. |

There's something weirdly satisfying about high-milers, they just hunker down and get on with the job - I guess all the bad bits that folk find they replace in the first 150K are all well behind it and replaced with better parts.
I had a 270k mile Peugeot 605 with the 2.1td engine and that was a great motorway car. I had a strange 'respect' for it.

My 1989 245 GL 2ltr/2.3ltr, CI. Now LPG, from 150k, has done 27m to 768k miles. One owner... Me.
No electronics. Last production. Mechanical bits wear out slowly, don't go wrong and are cheap. The problem is the steel monocoque, water and salt gives lots of rust! Rebuilding the rear end cost £6k. I need a lot more wax injection which I shall do more often. Lesson well learnt. Looking towards 1mK now! BrianH |

My 2004 XC70 will soon clock up 180,000 miles. I bought it at two years old with 54,000 miles in it. I checked the satnav and the guy had been driving from Ipswich to Scotland most of the time, so was happy to buy it. I thought I was going to have to scrap it when it developed a weird water loss, but I keep nursing it along. Just replaced the thermostat, as it started to leak, so hopefully back to my bleeding and topping up every 1000 to 2000 miles. I’m going to run it until it dies.

I was once in Kwik Fit in Wakefield back in 2016 getting a new tyre following a puncture on my 1 week old XC60 - at the same time a chap was in with a 64 plate V70 and I overheard him saying the mileage was 78k which was a bit bonkers for a 18-month old (ish) car. Anyhow got talking to him and he owned a company that collected and moved around airline pilots and cabin crew from UK airports to their home and back etc. with European airlines like KLM it's not uncommon to depart from Manchester at 6am and end up in Gatwick at 6pm having covered 5 hops around Europe. He always bought V70's and ran them almost 24 hours a day (with different drivers, sometimes double crewed). He would run them as long as they remained reliable, some got sold at 150k some got sold at over 300k. All had main dealer service history - no more, no less...
