Default S60 2.4 D5 (163 Hp) engine Core Plug failure POLL

Hi All,

I'm gathering information on the Core Plug failure that may affect the 163hp D5 engine. How many of you had this issue? And if yes, at which mileage did it happen ?

Here some more information on this https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=182891

Thanks!

Mines a 2004 s60 d5 and my stupid rubberised core plug let go at 200000 miles, as well as the turbo. Now have a metal one fitted plus rear crank seal and clutch flywheel and csc, they only leak once they have moved out enough to be clipped by the flywheel and get spun 90 degrees in the hole.

Absolutely no idea!

Car’s on 205,000 miles, had a replacement engine before I bought it - no idea of mileage (seller said 50k less, but no proof). No sign of a leak, may or may not have been changed. No oil leak I’m aware of - MOT tomorrow!

Mine let go about 5 years ago at around 110K to 120K. Cost me around £1100 to have fixed which included full clutch kit & DMF plus main crank oil seal as a precaution. Appeared to lose quite a lot of oil (1 - 2 pints I'd say) in the very short, 1 to 2 mile journey back to my driveway. Had it towed into a local, trusted service garage to have the repair done. Garage said it had turned 90 degrees just as Darlo 1 has described.

Does this happen because the breather pipe to the turbo cold air inlet is blocked ? or is the heater at the inlet pipe blocked, making high crank case pressure ? only thinking

...never thought to check that! I'm going to make a note to check it when I service the car.

I can't vote, the option is not there. I have heard of the core plug issue but not experienced it...

Also, I had no idea it was rubberised until now. I just thought "core plug" and immediately envisioned a metal cap popped in place. Good point on crankcase pressure/breather causing it as the few replies so far have wildly varying mileages.

Hi ma70, I can see the vote button myself, maybe it has to do perhaps with a specific browser ? I'd try contacting the forum admins, there may be a glitch with the polls option

My core plug went on about 190-200 thousand miles.

He was refering to the fact that there's no jinx-attracting option such as "yes I know about it but haven't had a problem".
