Default Fuel Issues

I have just purchased my first Volvo (XC90 2004 D5 Auto) and am delighted with it. However, on only the 3rd trip out the engine service light warning message flashed up and I lost power (car entered limp mode). I stopped, restarted and everything seemed fine. Fuel gauge just on red and showing 90 miles to empty. Drove the 4 miles back home with no further incident. Next day wouldn't start so called RAC and after diagnosing the codes was told the fuel rail pressure was low and minor leak. After topping up the diesel started fine so returned it to dealer who fixed problem. However, has gone into limp mode on another occasion when getting close to the low fuel mark.

Am I correct in guessing that its probably a dodgy fuel sender and should just keep it well topped up? Is it an easy enough fix or not worth the hassle.

Don't run it anywhere near as low as that.

The in tank fuel pump is probably trying to pump nothing but air.

Put plenty in and see if the problem reoccurs.
