Steering: - No Power steering in reverse

I have an issue and I a trying to get my head around what the problem can be.

I recently purchased at 2010 XC90 AWD Geatronic, low mileage full SH... But on a test drive found firstly a knocking knuckle noise coming from Steering when driving slow or fist thing in the morning, and lack of power steering most notably when reversing.

I am hoping someone could put their finger on what might be causing this? I have been told that a few people have had the same issues with XC90 even new ones...

Can anyone advise?

Do the following in this order, progress only if the step doesn't fix the problem:
1. Check power steering fluid level, top up if low; remove if overfull
2. Check all power steering hoses for any possible pinching when motor rocks/vibrates/moves (due to being in reverse)
3. Change power steering fluid
4. Change power steering pump
