Is your engine leaking at the seals Rick? I have neoprene seals and have no leaks.

No you will need to use the neoprene seals. You can always go back to the older timing cover and rear seal housing if you wish.
I'm also in favour of using the felt seals as they self align and still work well on the inevitable slightly scored crank or sleeve. Neoprenes need to be set up just right and don't work well on a rough surface.

In light of the oil seal debate, I'm pleased to announce I can provide feedback for both. After replacing the timing cover's felt seal, i had bit of a surprise when i removed the fly wheel to find a Rubber seal (had been badly fitted)

I'm going to stick with the miss matched pair for now and let time decide.

In Other news... couple of small victories, Cam and timing gear and cam has been changed. Fortunaltly cam bearing where in good condition.

Gears came off easily after i bent some hooks from the local builders murchant and modifying my puller to suit. had to grind the puller jaws from the crank gear.

Also had a spuradic purchase yesterday, I was being introduced to a local rally driver when we spotted a Gearbox from his old 142s with the J type overdrive. condition was unknown but it looks very well looked after if not recenly rebuilt. £120 payed.

.

Work in the car has been slow due to the lovey July weather we are having.. bit of work in the engine bay but nothing worth writing home about.
Cross member and suspension arms are back from blasting, ill pop some pics up when powder coated and bushed. will be a while yet

OD/box was a bargain. Best mod you can do to an Estate. Hopefully it is a good one.

Hi ya

Just catching up with this thread sorry to hear about the nerophane seals but you will have to replace housing to revert back as they machine them to fit the seals used nowadays which makes it another bad idea in my book

Felt all the way for years hassle free driving

Ok congratulations on the overdrive purchase you will ! Need the short front prop aswell and also a overdrive speedo cable to suit for it to function as you need so if the guys got the short prop snap that up sharpish ...
And a o/d switch plus a light with low brightness so not blinded while night driving seen that happen before .

Keep up the gd work and enjoy the sun

Kind regards
Robert.w

Ben
of course

Prop arrived the other day. I did some quick and rough measuring to see if i have a fighting chance when I'm under the car, difference between non-overdrive and overdrive prop was 11 - 11.5 inches. overdrive unit was approx 11 inches extra in length. happy days
