Default Buying help

Hi All,

I've long loved the volvo sinced I was a kid and my dad had a T5 estate. I'm currently looking to get a second hand XC60 somewhere around the £10-11k region, so 2010 - 2012 looking at AutoTrader.

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on possible issues that they may have or things to look out for. I currently have a migh mileage Audi A5 diesel which has a timing chain, things like that to look out for with higher mileage volvos would be really helpful.

I've had a look on the forum and there doesn't seem to be a buyers guide so any issues etc you guys could flag up would be lovely.

Currently looking at AWD, 2.0 or 2.4 ideally.

Thanks,
Paul

Think you need to put this in the Pre 2008 section

Hi,

Slightly confused, I'm looking at cars from around 2010-2012 so why would I go the pre 2008 sub?
Am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks

you wouldnt - post 2008, pre 2017.

Not sure what your objectives are for the change but I have had a few Volvos and a couple of Audis.... The trouble with the previous model XC60 in my view is that the geartronic is a bit slow witted and old fashioned but the manual doesnt suit the car - and 1st is so low its almost unusable on the road (I was driving a 2014 2.4 D4 AWD).

Seats are great, tech about on a level with the A5 of vintage yours will be, ride is decent, handling a bit boat like.

Reliability seems good - I had a 2007 S60 that I bought with 30k miles on the clock at 2.5 years old, and sold it 3.5 years later with 155k on the clock. Only real concern in that time was an alarm issue (common on S60 of that era due to position of components) and general servicing.

Also had an XC70 that I bought at 6 years old and 50k miles - changed the aux belt on that for safety at a cost of a couple of hundred. Cam belt and aux belts due at 108k if I recall from work on S60 - again not too pricey.

Sorry to be a pain. I can't see the forum that I should be posting in. Could you show me?

Thanks for your info there. My main reason for change is the practicality, my 2012 A5 is fantastic, 3.0ltr, but a rattle starting on the timing chain and we're looking to add another kid to the family so the room of the XC60 is ideal.

It's obviously going to be a drop in performance from the 3.0ltr but your comments on the gearboxes are concerning. The average mileage on the cars at the price point I'm looking at is 70-90k. Do you think I might be in for some big bills with that?

Thanks,

I've posted it over there. I'll try to figure out how to delete this one.

In any case, coming from an ex V60 owner- if you're looking for a diesel- get a D5. I've owned a D3, driven a D4 on multiple occasions- I think they are underpowered for an XC60. Otherwise all good and reliable engines.

dont think they are unreliable - Volvo claim sealed for life on autos I think with no fluid change required but the general consensus is better to change the fluid at about 70k miles - I would have done with mine and my brother (a mechanic did with his - as he pulled a caravan).

Presume your A5 if 3.0 (diesel?) is an auto - multitronic or DSG? You will notice the Volvo is less fun to drive (I had a 2015 A6 3.0 TDI DSG too..) but more comfortable seats.....

Having had XC60 (previous model) and A6, when picking my new car I looked at both the new XC60 and SQ5 - suffice to say that 4 rings won for me...
