Engine re-set
I had an intermittent loss of power on my 2004 S40 which turned out to be a problem with the fuel pump. When I got the car back I noticed that overall acceleration was greatly improved.
However, after 3 days or so it dropped off again.I took it back to the dealer and had a word with the engineer who told me that the cars adjust themselves to the style of the driver over a period of time and that I'd noticed the improvrment because he always reset the system (or whatever) whenever a car came in for service or repair. As I hadn't done much mileage over the 3 days it had gone back to its previous level. He reset it again and it was 'perky' again. My problem is that no-one believes cars can actually adjust themselves like this but there must be something in it as performance is noticably improved. Can anyway explain this in layman's terms? Many thanks |

basically if you drive the car gently, it will feed the power in gently. blast around and it thinks you want power, and power NOW.... the car just adapts to the style of driving it is used for. to reset it, just leave the battery disconnected overnight. cheers scott |

RE: Engine re-set
same thing happens with alot of auto gearboxes now adays, they can adapt to the style of the driver and change up at higher or lower speeds earlier or later

RE: Engine re-set
Just as a matter of interest - if the engine has adapted itself to 'nice and steady', does subsequent driving like a bat out of hell change the settings again or does the engine have to have a reset?

if i recall, booting it a few times will cause the ECU to learn a new style of driving is required and adjust itself accordingly. cheers scott |
