Default no valve clearance

Hello,
This post is linked to my timing belt failure post.

I replaced the one bent valve, did all the usual stuff, then on temp fitting the cam to check the shims I find firstly... I cannot rotate the cam...then I find no clearance on the new valve.

Have I made an error or is my new valve suspect? I bought it from parts_monster off eBay, it says original equipment number 463526.there is a number on the package...234335526 I think it reads. It doesn't appear to be any longer looking at the end protruding from the spring.

The shim is 0.159 thou" if I get a new one 0.15thou" smaller (assuming they come that small) it still might not be thin enough as I can't measure any clearance at all. I hope the valve isn't too long and i've bent the cam.

If my local volvo dealers could've been bothered to man the parts department I would have bought genuine volvo parts.

I don't know where to go from here.

any advice welcome.

Regards Ken

Oops! should have typed ...if I get a new one 0.015" smaller... that's 15 thou inches not as I previously typed... 115" thou, stupid of me.

Incidentally the other shims I measured are 0.159" or 0.4mm approx

I would need 0.143" or around a 0.35mm.

Of course I meant 3.5mm not 0.35 but I'm sure you realised my mistake.

I've spent ages looking for shims but I can only see 4mm ones for sale.

just get a volvo valve from FRF Swansea or Keith Price Abergavenny, they will look after you .you don't want to be replacing a burned out valve again in a year or two try the volvo valve , most of the guys in those workshops above will have some old shims kicking around , get a thin one so you have a gap to measure then go from there...

First, you won't have bent the cam!

Second, have you fitted an exhaust valve into an inlet valve tract?

The lengths will be the same but the opening and also head diameter of the valve will be larger for the inlet than exhaust so if you've mistakenly fitted an exhaust valve to an inlet valve tract, the head will go much further in.

That is an image of a B234 head showing 2 bent exhaust valves which are considerably smaller than the two apparently undamaged inlet valves which are the cleaner ones. The important bit is that the inlet valves are much larger, same goes for the B200 engine, inlet valves are larger. That means the hole they sit in (the inlet tract) is larger too so the valve will go further in - worth checking before you start shelling out on various shims etc.

Also someone discovered that VAG shims are available that are the same size with various thicknesses available so that might be another option once you've confirmed whether you've fitted an exhaust valve in an inlet place or not.

These are the shims you need

https://www.eurosport-uk.net/shop/in...products_id=45

Order them early in the day ad they're usually with you the next day!

I might have a 3.5mm shim somewhere, I'll have a look for it.

For what it's worth, I have a factory set of shims for the VW Rabbit (Golf) which also is the same as D24T Volvos.

The range goes from 2.90mm to 4.15mm at least. And in 0.05mm increments.

I can't say if the Volvo ones span the same range, but I wouldn't be surprised... 3.5mm thick doesn't seem that thin to me.

Thank you all,

I've been pondering why it is I can't rotate the cam, (It's on the bench, should've made that clear) I didn't put any oil seals either end, would that make a difference to clamping force? ( I didn't tighten nuts full torque BTW)

I definitely didn't fit an inlet valve Dave but you're right to mention. explore all options.

Seems the consensus of opinion is the valve is not to spec.

Many thanks Ken.

I didn't suggest you'd fitted an inlet valve, i suggested you'd fitted an exhaust valve in an inlet position. If the new and old valves are the same length (which they should be) compare the head sizes - if the new head is smaller then you probably need an inlet valve for where you're fitting it.

Oh I see. I took the exhaust valves out one at a time. I didn't remove the inlets.

I sprayed LO 30 degreaser in all the ports to leak test the valve seals, only number 4 exhaust showed any signs of leakage.
