Do you have the large plastic splash guard on your car ?
Did you shut off the engine quickly ? If so, even if it's oil, I don't think it would have caused engine damage. The only damage I would worry about would be from the physical impact - that thing could crack anything underneath, from oil pan to transmission housing, steering rack, crank pulley, radiator and so on. Even just crush a fuel line which would cause the engine to stop. May also be steering fluid from the bottom hose. I'm not truck expert, but possibly that piece was some accessory poorly secured - perhaps like something used when securing a cargo load or alike

I'm not sure that looks big enough for a truck - maybe some scrap that the truck just threw up from the road? Definitely worth getting the car back - its got to be worth fixing.

Whilst you await the news (sorry about that) ....

Today I have just fixed the abs warning lights on mine, which turned out to be the age old dry solder joints in the abs module.

I was then left with an emissions service warning - cleared that code and 25 miles later no lights up and no codes - that has to be a good day given I bought the car with these faults and now all i have left is an MOT warning of inner track rod ends and a timing belt to do.

Well, two days....

Fitted new handbrake cables, new rear discs and pads, new front discs (probably not needed) and pads, and a drop and fill of the Auto Box (3 litres out, three litres in).

One handbrake cable very sticky (found once out), caused most of the above to happen

This a useful howto video for cables/rear brakes:

did my first 400 mile drive in the new (to me) V70 - previously had D5 - this is a T5 - have to say even though I have had a few V12's - never seen a car with such a tremendous thirst -

didn't go above 70 on the motorway in cruise....and admittedly there was a bit ofup and down a few big hills across the moors but averaged 28.7 - and that was with a light foot

In some ways it was worth it for the peaceful cruising....

Does this sound normal ?

I saved this quote some years ago, can't remember where it came from but it fits your experience on MPG - I get similar from mine in general driving but if I'm doing a motorway journey I'll get into the low thirties on a fast cruise.

'If you want 60mpg and eco-friendly then forget the T5.

It was designed to go from A to B at speed with good handling, safety and Jeremy Clarkson style fun.

If you're worried about the petrol bill, it’s not the car for you.'

Given my lowly 2.4 non turbo petrol is averaging @ 34 mpg, I'd say you are not doing too badly

Sounds about right for mixed driving - a long motorway journey with the cruise turned off will get you up to around 36mg on occasion but press the loud pedal too hard and it drops significantly......but it is just so much fun to leave "sports cars" in your wake.

That said I live in an area which does have some very steep hills in and around the town - average around town is of the order of 19mpg with a 2.3 auto which rarely gets out of 3rd driving the 4 to 6 miles into any of the Medway towns.
