As the 740 trivia thread has been dead and buried in a shallow grave I thought I'd exhume it with the news that my 744 passed it's MoT yesterday - with no advisories.

Not bad for a 32 year old !

Congrats on the pass Jon - i don't think the trivia is completely dead & buried yet, just a bit of thread-wander creeping in!

A lot of it has still been trivia although maybe not directly connected to the 740. Apparently the 740 was the most sold car in Sweden from 1986 to 1998 (including the 940s) so there are still loads on Swedish roads. Apparently the 760 is rare over there, especially the estate version.

That bit of trivia came to me this morning via another forum but from a native Swede who strangely enough, doesn't own a Volvo!

I can verify this, I was in Gothenburg, Malmo and Eskilstuna last summer and there are a ton of them still motoring about. I was over there on work business and was really disappointed that I didn’t have time to get to the Volvo museum in Gothenburg!

Is a meeting still on the cards?

Gives me an excuse to spend time in my beasty 960 and away from the missus - we all need a bit of "me time" from time to time!

Cheers

Excellent news. My Lexus passed also with no advisories and even managed on Monday evening to fit the new AC condenser and got it re-gassed on Tuesday along with the MOT. A good day was Tuesday!

I agree with 'AllHailKingVolvo'. The Swedes tend to keep their cars much longer than we do, too. I think this is in part due to them not sharing our obsession with having the latest registration on the drive. A neighbour with a '15' plate Merc was saying precisely that to me the other day; he now regards his car as 'old' and was talking about replacing it. Not having a year identifier on the plate has much to commend it!

Regards, John.

You're not wrong John - i've picked up some really nice cars in my time for peanuts just because it's "old".

I look at overall condition, general mileage and signs of it having been looked after during the miles it's done.

One factor re people in different nations keeping their cars is, perhaps, how they tend to buy and sell their cars.

A lot of cars in the UK are sold by various "dealers". They need to earn commission, that's fair enough and their business has serious overheads. But often their sales patter asserts their interests over knowledge and sweeps reality under the carpet.

I've seen a car salesman knowingly speaking to a Chief Government Auditor, and declaring black is white re the the arithmetic of depreciation. LOL

Subject to exceptions, if one buys a car then the newer it is, the faster it depreciates. Brand new depreciates before the ink dries on the purchase agreement. Simples.

A car dealer friend of mine reckons the scrappage scheme in the UK killed a large percentage of remaining 7/900 saloons, with more estates surviving due to their practicality.

I wonder how many old Volvos are sitting in the holding pen full of scrappage scheme cars in Folkestone or wherever it is...?
