Difficulty starting
It seems my car has developed a cold start issue to go along with it's warm start issue - so I need to grab the bull by the horns and give it some attention...
Firstly I'll put the battery on charge, not that I think it's the issue but I may as well do it. Secondly is to give the car a service - I haven't serviced a petrol car since about 2005 so can someone please advise the parts/supplier I need...? If the car is still different to start then I'll have to replace some of the obvious sensors one by one - not something I really want to do but I don't know how old the existing ones are so I guess there's no harm in it. Fingers crossed this will sort both issues out Any advice welcome 😁 Kelv Edit - I've just read the thread regarding genuine oil filters, so I looked online for a local dealer ( Poole Audi/Volvo ) about 5 miles from me. I'll pop down at the weekend to order a genuine oil filter and other parts you guys recommend stay genuine.

As far as general servicing is concerned, back about twenty years ago, if you took your car to Volvo they would follow a schedule similar to the attached. There are various versions and vintages of this available online. They vary somewhat according to market; for example, the US market includes intermediate oil changes at 6 months or 5,000 miles.
You could also consult the Haynes manual for recommended service intervals. That is likely to be a bit more generic. Be aware that Volvo’s detailed service guidance can vary by model year. For example, the earlier style of timing belt requires more frequent changes than the later one. Some of these nuances are referred to in the FAQ. For tackling your starting problems you maybe want to focus on fuel and ignition systems first. |

Your problem might be a lack of servicing, but its also likely that you'll change a load of parts and the faults will remain.
The main servicing needed is oil and filter, and if you do alot of miles you will need ignition parts and cleaning. I haven't hardly serviced my ignition in many years, the bosch 4 prong are still in there, and haven't looked at the disti in years. Bad starting is a specific problem and I'd be looking at ignition glow in the dark, blue corona at leak points, inspect the disti and plugs and check ECU coolant temp sensor. Fuel pressure regulator also should be looked at, ideally check the pressure. |

My recent purchase of a 1994 940S had a starting issue. Sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't. Turned out to be a crankshaft sensor.
