Default V50 1.6d Se

Just about to decide to purchase a V50 1.6D SE and from the many comments read it appears that the fuel consumption is not that good. Still have a 7 year old Golf estate 1.9TDI that currently averages 52mpg.
I would have thought that this should be bettered with a 1.6D but maybe the body is too heavy for the engine size. Can anyone offer any commenst on fuel consumption please.
Also have been trying to find some details of any encap test ratings for a V50but apparently the V50 has not been done. Does anyone have any details.
Volvo themselves were not very helpful on anything to do with safety (suprisingly) - so I am a bit pertubed about the potential purchase.

Desiels a good choice but get the 2.0. The 1.6 will be OK but your not going to go anywhere in a hurry, better than the 1.8 petrol though. I get about 40mph from my 2.0d when driving normally.

Had my V50 2.0d since august and average 43mpg in mixed driving so far. Bought it with 78,000 miles on so the engine is nicely run in.
I had a corsa 1.7 cdti before and averaged 49mpg so am quite pleased really.

I'd expect it to perform as well as the S40 to be honest.

I've got a 2.0D and get about 43mpg from it, I can imagine that you will get more from a 1.6D if you drive it reasonably but if you want it to move in a hurry I'd imagine that the 2.0D will end up being more economical.

Bought my 1.6D in May with 1200miles on the clock (56 plate) and I am very happy with the performance and the MPG. On a full tank and sitting at an average of about 70 on the M way I pulled in to refuel with an extra 530miles on the clock and with 55 miles still to go according to the read out in the dash.
It is also has a lot more poke than my 1.6 petrol classic had and that was a thirsty bugger.

Did you compare the 1.6 with the 2.0 ? I'm interested in the possible smoother running of the 1.6. My company uses the 1.6 hdi (90bhp) engine in Peugeot 307 estates and whilst I detest these cars the engine is almost silent, almost like a petrol engine.
How impressed are you with this aspect of it?

Hi there. Your consumtion looks ok to me and is what I would expect to get from that size and weight of car . Before buying did you look at any of the Volvo crash test results and if so do you have any info on it still. Both the dealers in my area (Sussex) and Volvo themselves in the UK are reluctant to talk about it.

Like all changes it (the increase in noise) takes a while to get used to. I feel the noise is on a par with the 1.6 classic but I always felt that was a noisy car. On the M way to be honest it is not too bad but like all diesels the stop start about towns it is quite intrusive and more so if you drive with a heavy foot.
I got such a good deal on the 1.6 I never considered the 2.0D. Money talks so they say.

Default Safety crash test

ADAC in Germany do their own NCAP type tests.
They group the S40 and V50 together.
