I have a 2005 XC90 D5 163hp geartronic aut. and I LOVE the car. It is my first real car, and I've developed a relationship with it like no other car. But there is a fear...

I am simply too scared to rev it... I'm afraid to damage the drivetrain of the now 14 year old car. I have NEVER floored the car and the max rpm I've hit is like 3500 rpm. My parents haven't revved the car over 2500 rpm because they just didn't, but I love the engine and turbo sound.

I'm afraid that revving above 3000rpm will damage the car. My dad and I takes good care of it, changing the oil etc. but I want to give it some gas.

Can I safely floor the car without being scared something will break?

Regards, Adrian
No problem whatsoever , The engine control unit protects it from any abuse , there is a max rpm limiter and power falls away long before this , it does the engine good by getting hot enough to burn excessive soot out .

Thank you all for the nice answers! Really helped me.

One more thing, the has this whooshing noise coming from the engine but only when it’s not warmed up. When it’s warm, the sound disappears. Is that normal?

Thanks

sounds as if you have a turbo pipe leaking or a split intercooler , If you get that fixed you will have some more power , isn't the engine light on yet?

The engine sometimes go on limp mode under somewhat “hard” acceleration, but it’s been a while since the last time it was in limp mode... I’ve had the boost solenoid changed. I really want to diagnose the car myself, so how do I check both the intercooler and the turbo pipes?

get someone to rev the engine hard in the car whilst you listen for the noise , and also feel for a considerable jet of air coming from a big boost pipe or the intercooler in front of the radiator , usually at the top or bottom , you usually get oily stains where the air is leaking out . Failing that you need to get underneath and see if the main plastic air pipe coming from the turbocharger which runs under the engine to the intercooler that sometimes blows off the turbo , a new plastic pipe will be needed if so .

But isn’t the turbo activated only during load, not in neutral/park? (Sorry if it’s a noobie question)

you will get a fair draught of air from a leak by revving it from idle to 5000 rpm full throttle every 5 seconds or so .
