Same engine and very similar mileage. Mine is just about to roll over to 160k.
Mine has a comprehensive service history so I'm confident it has not been neglected. Do you have any other symptoms other than the oil loss? |

Nothing I've noticed - but it's my wife's car, so I don't drive it regularly. Had a full history from the main dealer in Exeter until we got it; very comprehensive as was company-owned. I mentioned it to the local indie at the service last year but he said not to be worried. Consumption has increased since then though.
I can't seem to find any definitive info on whether or not there's a PCV system on this engine - or how to check it for blockages!

There must be some form of crank case ventilation but I can't imagine it getting blocked on a car with a full service history that uses modern fully synthetic oils.
I'm starting to think the problem with mine is worn turbo seals. Hopefully I'll get it figured out before long. The car is great but if I need to add £15 worth of oil everytime I fill up it will have to go on the grounds of economy! |

Any update on your consumption woes? I'm now on a litre every 750 miles, so something's definitely awry...

No change, still going through 2 litres every 1000-1100 miles. I have now noticed that if I keep it in low gear down a hill with the throttle closed I get a puff of blue smoke when I accellerate again. The smoke only lasts for a second before it completely clears.
There is another post in the diesel section about similar age/mileage car with same engine and horrendous oil consumption. The poster reported that he stripped and rebuilt the engine. He said the oil control rings were blocked. I suspect if that is the case we may both have the same problem. For now I will keep adding oil when I need to! |

Check the obvious before getting excited about turbo seals and the like.
Check for leaks, although a leak that bad would hopefully be self evident. Then removed, check, clean and refit all the breathers and filters. Laborious, but not as laborious as having the turbo rebuilt, discovering g that wasn't the problem, and then having to do the breathers anyway. Good luck. |

Two separate garages independently diagnosed a piston ring problem, most likely caused by the excess diesel injected during a regen.
The XC90 went for scrap in the end, I now have a Toyota Hilux but my wife drives a v60 so I still keep an eye on the forum! |

Thanks for the closure Jamie - sad but "it was probably time to put her out of her misery"
Cheers Dave |
