Default 1998 c70 t5 gt boost issues

Hi all,

I have recently bought a 1998 C70 t5 p1, something I've wanted for a while.

I bought the car at a reasonably cheap price with the intent of spending money on it to bring it back to it's former glory.

I have a question and if anyone can help I'd very much appreciate it.

The revs dip below 1k as low as 500rpms then jump up again, hunting basically.

Am I right in saying the ETM needs either cleaning first and see how it goes or have it refurbed? Its the yellow stick Magentti one.

Also as i get to around the 3,000 rpm mark and the turbo seems to hiss, sounds to me that it has a dump valve however it doesnt and it doesnt boost properly, hesitant to be honest.

Could this be either a vaccum pipe from the turbo having a split in it and would this cause smoke from the back of the exhaust on full throttle and a smell of oil?

I am new to these cars however have the money to replace the parts and have plans for a remap from BSR to bring it to 294 BHP but need to make sure the neccesary parts are all good prior to the remap.

I hope someone here can help answer my questions as I love the car and to be fair for the money and the spec i've got in it, i am over the moon.

It does would like your ETM needs sorting, I go down that route first. As for the his, check for any loose or split pipes on the induction, go for the easy solutions before moving to the more drastic stuff.

Thanks for the reply, i'll be checking out all the pipes to the Turbo this weekend.

What do yo think the best solution would be for the ETM, have it refurbed or buy another?

If it's buy another, i have researched that it needs software so the ecu works with it properly? Is this true?

I mean programming.

Thanks

Chris

Cheers The Thong, seems a reasonable price too seen as it's a common fault on these cars with contactless sensor positioning.

Have the work cut out this weekend, have an MR2 t bar rev 4 thats goes better. will be a different car im sure once sorted out. I'll be posting up photos this weekend once ive gave it a good polish. bought it last sunday and working all week.
