940 indicator switch problem
1995 GLE Auto Estate (ZF Box). Fumes came out of the switch area yesterday after I started up for second trip of the day and used indicators to pull out. I was indicating right and the left indicator light was blinking weakly in sympathy with the right (and correct) one. Fumes subsided, but fault continued. I removed the fuse (No 9) and went home.
On reaching home (a short distance) I expected to find melted wiring, but it all looked ok around the switch multi-plugs, so I assumed something inside the switch causing a fault (debris, worn piece of metal or wire??). On putting back the fuse, all seemed well, so I assumed debris or whatever had burned out or moved. To-day, although working well, there was a faint fume smell after 15 mins driving, and the in sympathy blinking started again. Further, I noted that using the headlamp flasher caused the left indicator arrow to light (at normal intensity) at the same time. Lastly, the relay was clicking at 'seat belt warning' speed, but the warning light wasn't showing (It still works properly as well). I'm assuming, subject to you experts' advice, that I'll need a new switch, or should I look for a wiring fault? If i need a new switch, is there a way of getting the switch off without removing the steering wheel (with attendant airbag/SRS problems)? is there a Z shaped torxx screwdriver? |

Hi, you can remove switch with a 1/4" hexagon shape Torx bit of the correct size.( usually available from motor factors or B&Q) The bit can be put in a small Vise grips or ratchet spanner ( like snapon 1/4" x 5/16" one) or 1/4" ring end of combination spanner and undoing the screw in small turns.
