this is first year i have bought winter tyres,it`s not been bad up here for years, and there is a shortage of tyrs at the moment in the highlands,so i had to take what i could get,i will take them off and use normal ones till it gets bad again, they will only cost about £70/80 ,local fitter said they will change the tyres each winter for me at no cost,so we will see what the winter brings, malcolmk

I dont mind buying tyres, I get through a fair amount with rallying and autotests. When I changed the wheels on my car I just made sure that I could fit these...

Camskill seems to be a really good site, had 8 or so tyres off them so far and £30 for a T1R makes me happy.

Default Expensive tyres!!

I've just had two 205-65-15's fitted to the rear of my 740..the cost??

64quid all in fitted..and they are excellent in the snow! Well that's coupled to having what I think is a limited slip diff as well.

Far better in the snow than our front drive Vw. Who said you need expensive tyres..lol!!

Tyres and insurance are both pricey. I shop around and do stuff to keep them down:

Insurance - I insured my ex police S60 T5 for £200 a year through Tesco with the clubcard discount - 3 years no claims, 51 year old living in Warwick, car parked on road.

I moved to the north west. Car parked in a garage at the end of a driveway. It's a S60 T5 Sport I just bought - insurance increased by 95%. So, rather than take the hit I applied as a new customer. I fiddled around with the excess and put a £125 excess instead of £250 - the price came down by £100.

Also, check job titles. If I put down Risk Manager my insurance increases if I put down Underwriter (both are the same thing and I do not have a generic title).

And I always put my wife down as a named driver - even though we are seperated. It is always lower with her on it. Same with her Audi - with me on it her quotes are lower. Makes no sense but that is insurance.

Tyres - there are always offers on, especially online.

I bought 4 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s last week. Walked into a few places - one said £127 each fitted, balanced. Went online and booked it in. Same tyres, same place for - get this - £87 each.

I asked why the difference and the guy said there is an online promotion. Also, tyres of the big multiples are stocked at a central distribution warehouse. The place I went to do not stock these tyres as they are expensive - they have to order them in. Order direct from the central warehouse and it is cheaper. And they threw in a free brake appraisal, cleaned my discs etc etc

My tyres were still more expensive than my insurance though.

My Insurance came down this year to around £450 which was pretty good

I have 2 sets of tires:

For Summer 4x PS4 235/40 18 was around £103 per tire from mytires.com

For Winter 4x Pirelli Sottozero 215/50 17 £50 per tire, these are on their 3 year now and doing incredibly well.

I can usually source tires at reasonable prices but insurance is another thing ,I run a S type Jaguar 3.0 petrol and a 2.7 liter diesel Jeep grand Cherokee.
Where I live the roads are littered with every type of SUV from Dacia to Bentley ,most on hire, and a lot of these go walkies so my insurance is crippling, the Jeep costs me over £800 pa where as the jaguar is less than £400.
One of my neighbors had his Freelander disappear from outside his house, never saw it again until whilst in Lagos on business it drove past him, still on UK registration plates. !!!!"

Wow!

The last time I paid for car insurance like that was for my first car - an H reg Black Escort XR3i. I'd just passed my test and they quoted me £750 - I thought that was bad.

That? Bad?

My first:
"Hello, I passed licence a week ago and I just bought a car, so I need to insure it and so I rang you.."
"OK, not a problem, sir, what's the reg number?"
"Xxxxxc(I don't remember now)"
"Yes, sir, I'm checking.. Oh, here it is, a silver Peugeot 306, 2001, 2.0litre turbo diese... Erm... When did you say you passed the licence?"

I paid £2k insurance for £350 "pocket rocket" on my first year..

Think I need to shop around next time. 2003 v70 D5 costs about the same and I do 4-5000 a year.
