What's actually wrong with your sunroof Hylton? There's someone breaking a 760 turbo diesel, uses the same sunroof panel but i believe has an electric roof.

You could always convert it to electric operation as well.

Hi Dave,

Great minds think alike lol!! I was going to ask a similar question - why is a whole sunroof required? And why a manual one specifically? Most of the parts are common to the electric one - the motor just takes the place of the winding handle.

That was exactly my thinking Kev - often the manual ones play up because of lack of use and/or lubricant so the gear on the back of the winder wears and jumps on the cable.

For some reason the electric ones seem to be better made and possibly get more use as well.

It's odd that any other components in the sunroof fail though unless the entire panel has rotted through of course!

Hi Thks for the input but the reason for manual is to keep the car original (just something I like to do) at present the rear will open for ventilation but it will not slide.Have not really looked into it yet as was going to when I recover the roof lining, was looking for a whole cassette as an easy option.Dont think it is going to be a simple repair because it rattles around a lot when driving.

Hylton.

Electric operation of the sunroof in a 740GLE was always an option - sunroof and manual operation was standard.

I'd keep the manual operation.

Hylton.
A "whole cassette" isn't an easy option. The good news is as you can tilt the panel, you can get the trim panel off the sunroof panel - this is probably the cause of your sunroof not sliding back. It will also give you access to the fasteners that hold the panel onto the mechanism so you could remove the panel and operate the mechanism back and forth until you find where it's snagging.

Do you have a Haynes manual for it? I mean the proper ones, the "Owners Workshop Manual" and NOT the "Service and Repair" manual.

Taking the headlining down is relatively simple in itself and the chances are, when you do get it down you'll find you need a replacement - ones from the 940/960 fit nicely but you'll also need the trim seal from the sunroof hole as it has two lips on later models to take into account the thicker headliner.

The second pic is the remains of the headliner when it came out, looks better there than it actually was! It broke into several pieces and was only fit for the bin!

Sounds like you've got a hectic schedule there! Not really the weather for it at the moment either!

I'm sure we'll be here when your time and weather improve so no hurry!

Hope the gearbox mount landed safe and sound as well!
