I had the same problem for months during which time I changed FPR, fuel filter, coils packs, all genuine Volvo parts. But the one thing that improved the starting was to fit genuine Volvo spark plugs. The engine seems very sensitive to which spark plugs are fitted, even if you get a good fat spark when testing non-Volvo ones.

Even after the starting issue improved, the engine management light stayed on with a P0171 code. Replacing the MAF sensor (Volvo at £250!) was the answer. Now it starts and runs a dream with much improved consumption. Good luck with yours.

hi agree with Paul t4, you could try a bottle of K seal, that might sort out the headgasket.

Can't figure out what this problem is from the descriptions, BUT I would not rush to try something like K seal until an HG failure is confirmed.

It won't cost much and is easy to change the spark plugs, if that does not help then it would be good to get the codes read. If the coolant level is falling or there are real signs of steam, or traces of Mayo on the dipstick, then the first thing to do is change the oil ASAP, just in case it's contaminated. Then drive at low power to the nearest place to get a compression check and cooling system pressure check done.

If it is kaput, then some more serious decisions have to be taken. K seal might then be worth considering if it's beyond repair, but in reality it won't seal a bad HG crack or last too long if the RPM is not kept low. Changing the oil on a very regular basis can allow an engine to carry on for years sometimes, although for engines with a turbo the outlook is not good, due to the sensitivity of the bearings to contaminated oil.

To answer your question, Volvo parts can be ordered and bought from any Volvo main dealer but FRF Volvo in Swansea (01792 790066) offer a good discount for Forum members. You have to quote 'C3' when you phone your order. They are a great bunch of blokes and delivery is usually two days later. I use them for all my spares. Bear in mind Volvo spares are generally more expensive than other aftermarket sources but you get what you pay for.
