Already available on Skoda Karoq and Kodiaq, so good to see VW taking technology from Skoda.

Rumours about JLR are still uncomfirmed. Rumours say latest ones have movement sensors on the keys, so won't work if hung up or in a jacket overnight.

It's a horrible trend now with people stealing them so easily.

Personally I have a faraday pouch, but be weary, some of them wear down very fast (mine for example still allowed the car to be unlocked from next to it after only a few weeks).

My spare keys I've wrapped tightly in foil, which has muted the signal going.

My main set I now have cut some foil to fit inside a faraday pouch, and between them the car can't be unlocked now even from next to it.

I only really put my key away in it at night, as during the day I'm usually not near the car (e.g. parked at work etc), and most thefts occur at night when it's parked outside.

I've been thinking about a steering lock but haven't yet.

Just wish I still had a garage!

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not after you......

Equally ironic is that I've heard some insurers load renewals if you specify the car is kept in a garage as opposed to a driveway, the theory being that once in the garage, thieves can work away for much longer without raising suspicion.

I've heard this too; not sure how true it is.

Given the size of modern garages I wouldn't see it as a major risk; I can't even get my XC60 into my garage...

Not true in my case, I got a discount by taking mine off the drive and keeping it in the garage.

Is volvo's system as vulnerable as others? I ask because

1) Volvo seldom appears on the list of vulnerable vehicles and
2) Even if you can unlock you can't start unless the key is seen inside the vehicle. I have an RFID entry tag on the same keyring, and fairly often I get in to the car and get the message that the "key cannot be found" - and the car wont start. I have to move the keys in my pocket around a bit to get the car to see it. I know it's the RFID tag because the other key without it is always seen.

when you watch the vid of that merc getting lifted which is in the press it seems as soon as they are in, the car can be started, or are all systems the same....it would seem to me that with Volvo it would be a two stage relay - wave the scanner around to get in to the car and then have to do it again to get it started.

Interesting to see this popped up on BBC again.

Ford, BMW and Merc are now looking to support motion detection technology i.e. the key stops transmitting when it's not moving.

But presumably it starts transmitting and remains to do so for a while after some movement? I am not moving when opening the door!
