Default S60 2003 Poor Radio reception

I`ve had a hunt around on previous threads and cannot see anything S60 specific to aid my investigation on this.

I have noticed that the FM radio reception on my head unit is pretty poor at times with even the high power transmitters ie BBC being very hissy etc.

Has anyone else had this issue that could give some pointers ?

At this stage I do not know whether I have a integrated rear demist /antenna or if there is a amplifier also inline or whether I am likely to have a bumper or side window ant.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated before I brave the constant torrential downpoors we seem to be having down south over the last month or more to try and troubleshoot the issue.

You can pickup in-line amps for around a fiver that plug into aerial behind stereo and pick up a live feed from radio ignition feed. They work pretty well and I have used in conjunction with windscreen aerials with success.

Are you using a phone charger or similar when you have the radio on?
Two of our Volvo radios have poor reception when you are.
The Volvo dealerships etc can not cure the problem.

I had exactly the same problem. Last week I looked around inside the cavity behind the rear offside trim in the boot. That's where the signal splitter lives. I found the black fly lead had come off as it passes through the body to connect to the bumper aerial. Reconnected it and all is well

Thanks for the replies so far.

In answer to comments so far I do have a 4 way cigarette power unit Velcro`d down near the base of the steering wheel at present that has phone lead, radar detector , forward facing camera & phone charging lead inserted. Not the best of setups at present but it is out of the way and I wanted to keep all the wiring as out of site as possible. I have seen a thread where a member has put one of these in his glove box and routed all wiring around back of dash which I am thinking of replicating something similar when work / weather permits.

On the splitter assembly at the rear can someone explain why a splitter would be installed ? where else is the antenna circuit being routed too ?

Due to my 12hr Nightshifts I am not going to get an opportunity to investigate issue at any length until next Tues when my shifts finish but hopefully the weather will start being a little kinder down here and I can start doing some of the little jobs to make the car a little more the way I want it and also fit my newly purchased GROM interface if it arrives by then...

The splitter refered to appears to be the aerial amplifier. According to Mr Haynes, it lives behind the right hand side boot trim panel.

Smile bumper aerial amp

Reggit is in the right place,, the aerial (which is in rear bumper) connection comes thru on a plastic sprig so the connection can be made inside the boot rhs to the amp? module, a pic of the bumper interior might help (attached)

I'm sure that I read a thread on here somewhere that said to replace the rear bumper aerial on the S60 with one from an S40 but I can't for the life of me find it now, or remember why!

Have you tried disconnecting the 4 way socket arrangement to see if the reception issue goes away? I've mounted a 3 way socket by the fusebox inside the end panel on the dashboard and wired it into an ignition switched feed at the back of the fuse board.
