Fog lights are very useful here in England, especially the rear fogs. Thick mist and fog can sometimes be a real issue. That said there are those who have no idea how to use them and dazzle other drivers.
I do have an aftermarket set of DRL's to fit to the wife's car, I've just not fitted them yet. Purchased the kit from China, quality seems ok. I guess I'll find out when I fit them. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Wate...847199238.html If anyone is after a cheap set of "Position Lamps", China have those covered too. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3078...863211909.html |

So, getting back on track.
I found this wiring diagram online(https://cardiagn.com/2011-volvo-xc60...p-39181202-pdf) page 71.. As you can see from the wiring diagram, the small incandescent parking lights in the headlights are wired in parallel with the LED Position Lamps and are controlled by the Central Electronic Module(CEM). So either there's a break in the wiring, or there's a faulty ground connection which is the most likely IMO. I'll find out later today when I remove the front bumper. My only concern was that the near side one has an open louvre which allows cold air to blow directly on to the screen wash bottle and might make it more likely to freeze. Not been a problem but we have not had any really cold winter days since fitted

After removing the bumper and disconnecting the large connector near the drivers side wheel I realised the fault lay with the large connector as the ground and wiring was 100% ok.
After pulling the connector apart and cleaning it with electrical cleaning spray I put the bumper back on and now they work perfectly. Access to the large connector is much easier via the front drivers wheel arch. Just remove the 4 screws, pull back the inner mud guard. |

The plot thickens - Indeed the circuit diagram shows the LED's and marker lamps connected in parallel but once a marker bulb died on my XC60 and the LED went out as well.
I was hoping they were in series as I had a mad plan. Both LED and bulb run quite dim so its a reasonable guess both are 12v but as they are connected in series they are only getting roughly 6v each (sharing the 12v) You can buy 3rd party control units on eBay, these can sense when the ignition is on and lights off (if wired correctly to the car) and they can send 12 volts on a separate cable. I was hoping to use the 12v supply to directly drive the LED. Hence when the ignition is on you get a bright LED DRL but as soon as you switch the lights on they would dim.

I think I'm right in saying that all the previous XC60 LED's are wired in parallel with the parking lights.
Just checked the wiring diagrams for the 2009 and 2010 XC60, both show the LEDs wired in parallel. 2009 https://cardiagn.com/2009-volvo-xc60...ng-diagram-pdf 2010 https://cardiagn.com/2010-volvo-xc60...supplement-pdf Last edited by Shadeyman; Jan 14th, 2019 at 09:16. |
