I have always wondered why a car must display where it is from? A different number plate and the wheel being in the other side is usually enough of a sign to tell me it's from another country. Why specify the country? Am genuinely curious.

Most likely so the authorities in that country know which agency to send any fines to.

Default Number plates after brexit

Just in case we do leave the EU I have now bought a set of GB stickers with Union flag to cover over the EU with stars and GB on my number plates. I got these for much less than a fiver from an eBay seller. I can now sit back and wait!

maybe cover your "eu" bit of your number plates with "FU"....might just confuse them a little?

I couldn't care less either way, some black sticky tape over it if it will cause offence, and a GB sticker that has been living on my car for some 19 years now

Mind you I was in France last week, and the fuel there is more expensive now than where I live (diesel)....used to go over there with an empty tank, and brim it before coming back......no wonder they all wear lumi jackets

It's not the GB on the numberplate that's the issue, it's the GB in the EU stars which indicate an EU member. Remove the stars and your good to go, unless there now need for a specific size as in the days before we joined.

Paul.

Surely the registration style gives that away? I think it's an archaic and potentially divisive practice

Exactly. If you travel enough you'll know a Belgian, Italian, German French Dutch plate etc a mile off. I quite like the distinct number plates for each Country. What sets them apart. Even more so unique without the blue bar. What I find interesting about Switzerland for example, their front plate style differs from the rear. IE the size.
