Default Metal in Fuel Filter

Hi all, I just had some issues with my 59 plate V70 2.0D misfiring and losing power under acceleration. After changing the diesel filter, the car is running great again but there were metal bits in the fuel that came out of the old filter. In fact, it looks like someone poured a bottle of glitter into the bucket. Is this a sign of the high pressure fuel pump failing, or normal after 150,000 miles of driving? This is my first diesel car so I'm still learning. My previous experience working on jets and cars tells me this probably isn't a good sign. Thanks in advance.
