I've had a few 850's over the years and used them all as daily drivers but latterly I had a 99 V 70 T5 Auto, again used daily however the arrival of a baby and non functioning air con, no isofix options and a sudden reduction in time for fettling cars meant it had to go in lieu of a P2 V70R. Since then, I've had several P2 cars, an XC70 and an XC90 which were all very good but I missed the character of an older P80 chassis car.
I bought an 850 T5 manual estate back in June, nostalgic glasses well and truly donned and to be fair, it was a cracker of a car. I ran it daily, doing up to 500 miles a week on a regular basis and it was fabulous however a lack of garage, time and living in a part of the world where most of the locals drive Massey Fergussons, I just got frustrated using and abusing as I did and given I relied on it daily, a lack of readily available parts was a concern. I loved the car but would have loved it more had I been in a position to use it as a weekend car / bit of a toy but situation dictated otherwise and so it was sold recently and I'm now back in another P2 V70 D5 which, whilst it lacks the pomp and circumstance of the 850, is just better suited for what I need plus I can use and abuse it without caring too much and I needed that. I miss the 850 dearly and I'd have another (or a P80 t5 engined car) but not for a daily. |

1996 855 and my wife uses it every day. 235000 miles on the clock. About 100,000 of those on LPG and still going strong.

Reflecting further on 'chelle_belle's post, I realise that the earliest V70s are now over 20 years old. This puts them firmly into 'modern classic' territory. To some, therefore, they are cars to be preserved and cherished, only to be enjoyed when the sun shines and the roads are free from salt.
For others, myself included, they are, very simply, a solid motor car which does - in the modern parlance - 'what it says on the tin'; a car to be used every day in all weather conditions. I think part of this is down to the 'culture' in this country, encouraged by governments of every hue, that newer is better and old is bad. It is also something that is exacerbated by the 'age identifier' introduced in 1963, onto vehicle number plates. When we first went to Sweden in the 1980s, we were surprised to see many Amazons still in daily use (It had already achieved 'collector' status here). When we commented on this, it was they who were surprised that we thought it worthy of comment. Even today, one can still see many 240s in daily use on their roads. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA and one of the world's wealthiest men, who died only last year, still regularly used his faithful 245. If an 'old' Volvo was good enough for Ingvar, it is certainly good enough for me! Regards, John.

Currently have two cars on the road which I alternate. The 1998 V70 T5 on around 130,000 miles and a more modern 1999 VW Mk4 Golf V5 with a genuine 53,000 miles.
We have owned younger cars but never really enjoyed driving them as they nearly all lacked any character. Out of the two current ones it is the V70 that always brings a smile to my face. It gets used as required for the journey (large loads or longer trips) and before I gave up full time work, tended to use it for daily commuting. Only reason for not being in daily use is that I now do not drive every day and have reasonable local public transport available if I do not feel like walking.

2 C70's T5's, mine doing 1,000 miles a week snow or shine.. destroys the Astra GTC and Merc E350 I tried on lease deals. Been doing this for 7 years.
My other C70 was doing this then I gave it to my mum and that's doing about 400 miles a week now. Neither skipping beat and only needing an ETM and a radiator upto 250,000 miles.

I have an 850 R as a daily driver. It replaced a ‘12 plate Passat that was really dull. Every drive in the 850 is fun.

My 855R is still my daily driver. Although I'm now retired I still have a great deal of fun with the local meets on the various Facebook volvo groups. Over 200000 miles now.

My 98 V70 2.5T is my daily driver, only car and first car at the same time.
Clocking between 200 and 300 miles a week, never got me stranded on the side of the road. Cheap pump E85 is helping with the thirsty 5 cylinders
