I have got as far as locating the thing......

They are on a different circuit but use the same plug so I guess if you have a dodgy plug it may make sense but I can't see why having a faulty PNP switch would do other things.... I can delve further in to the wiring diagrams if I can find one if you like....

My S70R developed this issue, lived with it for some 3 years.

Being stranded at petrol station not know if the car will start in a few moments or a few hours was less than pleasing.

Anyway, batteries always replaced with Bosch S5, new antenna rings all made no difference. I changed the fuel pump relay, its seemed to improve a little.

Ours ended up being a starter motor, only found this when after many years of of this, the car failed to start outside a shop down the road. Replaced with a Bosch Starter motor and its been spot on ever since.

Just to add a suggestion...

Any history of the ignition switch (electric side) ever being replaced? Could be pitted contacts in the start position.

Thanks Bafler. The starter was replaced with a previous owner.....chasing the same issue so it seems. That’s according to the history, the bill is there anyway.
It certainly could be that. As said it did it waiting for its Contrôle Technique the other week and the tester tapped the motor with a crow bar whilst I cranked it and off it went.
Yesterday morning I did three start-ups, on the third it was ‘dead’ gave the starter 5 ‘love taps’ with the ‘duty crow bar’ and it fired up immediately.
Then in the afternoon nipped out on errands which needed 5 start-ups and it was spot on every time......

That sounds very much like the starter motor solenoid is sticking and the "love taps" free it off.

Put a decent starter motor in it, even if there is a receipt showing its been done, always assume the previous owner went 2nd hand or cheap new as well as any garage potentially overcharging and putting in something else than what they billed for!

When I got mine, the Volvo guys like Tim Williams, Kings Volvo all advised go Bosch. I got mine from Carpart4Less (Eurocarparts warehouse) and at the time(last year, this was the best deal).

Gotta agree with the above - bend over and shell out for a decent starter motor and enjoy reliable starting I reckon!

So , if it is the solonoid sticking , I take it that would give the ‘no crank’ issue?

In a word, yes.

The solenoid pushes the starter gear into the engine's ring gear, and at the same time (or fractionally afterwards) ALSO connects the motor to the battery power. Therefore if the solenoid doesn't move, neither of these will happen and of course it won't crank.
