Default New addition for the V70

Well it has set me back 899 SEK including postage and have to wait for the postal service to get in gear but finally got hold of a V70 phase one rear spoiler with built in brake light, seem to be like rocking horse poo to locate and it will need spraying but after two years I have finally tracked one down Pictures to follow once it arrives and gets painted/ fitted - Mike

Parcel arrived this morning well packaged with no damage so it's time for a few pictures, but before I sprayed it the spoiler mounted brake light had to be removed which was great fun as the torx head bolts were corroded and needed drilling out. The remainder of each bolt was extracted leaving the threaded insert undamaged in the spoiler which was a good result, new bolts will be easy to find.

First a quick rub down with 1200 grade wet-n-dry to key the surface followed by a few layers of grey primer

The recess where the brake light resides (it does work with all 20 LEDs illuminating when I tested it).

A quick blast of colour matched paint from an aerosol that was two years old, I decided to use this to build the colour up before leaving the spoiler for a few days to bake in the conservatory before it gets a rub down and final top coat with new paint followed by the lacquer

Should be on the car by weekend all things being equal - Mike

Nice! I'll be interested to see this when it's fitted. I've got the normal spoiler on my V70, I didn't even know you could get one with the brake light built in! Where they fitted to uk spec?

Yeah they were fitted to uk spec awd and awd R for 2 years as an optional extra mine has one on from the factory. It was a £200 optional the time and our local Volvo dealer found out that they were only 56 ever brought into the country and only 2 still going on cars. So there a bit rare

Wow, that does sound pretty rare! Nice find in that case.

Mike

I am green with envy and would love one of those as well.

Some leading questions...
  • What happens to the original light at the top of the rear window?
  • How do you get the wiring from the spoiler brake lights into the car and connected?
  • And 899 SEK? What currency and what's that equivalent to?

Original light in the tailgate window is disconnected and the spoiler light connects to this wiring, I intend to keep the tailgate brake light but it will ONLY be lit in the event of brake pedal AND ABS pump running, in otherwords when the car is at the point of maximum brakes (entering skid) at this point it is intended to make it flash.

There is a channel for the wiring to enter the tailgate from where it ataches on the drivers side, this does mean the internal trim needs removing for access but thats no big deal, the spoiler is hollow to let the wiring run through the spoiler.

899 SEK Is Swedish Krona with an exchange rate of about 10:1 it makes the cost including deleivery from Sweden about £89 add to that the cost of the paint and it will stand me at around £125 once fitted - Mike

Now that is an interesting idea for the 'inside' brake light!

You could go over the top (if you haven't done it already) with a twin rear fog lights configuration instead of the Euro 'off-side light only' one, and add a relay that switches them on as well. Or really OTT an wig-wag? Only joking!

Years ago there were proposals that brake lights should show more brightness the harder the pedal was pressed - but it was never adopted. Shame - especially when you see some of the rear end shunts on the motorway.

It already has the aftermarket rear lights that have twin rear fogs, so I guess I have done that one.

Didn't consider a wig-wag as such but a "Night Rider" effect on the rear center light was thought about then dismissed within a few seconds as stupid and childish. Whatever I do with the center brake lights will only be related to braking, the rear side light clusters already have 896 LED's divided between them (112 per "bulb") - Mike
