Default Weak bonnet springs

Anyone ever seen a V70 Classic with a bonnet that won't stay up unaided? Seems like weak springs but I'm not how clear you could overstrain them.

Capt. Jack says he's never heard of it and there may be something broken, but I can't see anything loose or missing.

Any advice welcome. Many thanks.

Regards, Mudhook.

I have lifted thousands of these bonnets and never seen weak bonnet springs, tailgate struts are every other but never bonnet springs. Maybe one of the springs has come off or snapped and its only using one?

Exactly what I thought, but close inspection reveals all bits in place and both springs hooked up and unbroken.

It will not stay fully open, but about half down it will just hold position. Slight pressure at that point will bring it down fairly sharpish.

Swapping the springs out looks like a wing-off job!

Hello Mh,
How far back is your bonnet opening? Hopefully i'm not offending you offering up the following information: at the hinges on either side are two retaining clips, one each side, these move out of the way of the hinge arms. Are these causing the issue? Slack perhaps?
It is certainly an unusal one, sounds like a possible visit to your local dealer.
Cheers

Yep, I see one with that problem every time I look out onto my drive Doesn't sound quite as bad as yours, but for the last few months it refuses to stay fully open on it's own. I've never bothered to investigate it, but I'll be following this thread to see if you get it sorted

Yes, I know about the little levers that allow the bonnet to open to vertical. If you use these the bonnet will go vertical and stay there.

But surely the bonnet should stay up when opened to the limit of before the little levers are moved? The three 740/940s I had certainly did. On my V70 the bonnet will just about support itself at 45 degrees open. Above and below that figure it will want to close, and if not noticed and prevented will do you an injury. And slam shut far more heavily than is good for it. And at 45 degrees it only needs a puff of wind to start it moving. At 45 degrees (you are looking at the Volvo badge on the grille) you can't really do anything under it, especially when it is likely to shut at any time.

All the hinges, brackets, levers and springs are in place and undamaged. Swapping out the springs is definitely a wing-off job; I'm not sure it's worth the hassle to do that.

Sorry I can't help but having tried mine if it is open more than about 12inches the springs actually want to open it further, other than knackered springs can't see anything in the mechanism likely to fail and cause your problem, but I can't imagine why the springs would fail either.

If you wanted to change the springs i have some, the wings come off very easy it's the arch liners that are more of a pain

I've looked at 850 wing removal under 850/V70 articles and it seems the inner wing comes off too. Are you saying I don't need to do that if I just want to change the springs?

Hello,
Sounds like springs is the way forward for you, your bonnet must have been opened more times than the yellow pages for them to be so deteriorated.
At the halfway point my bonnet too is champing at the bit to open more, still i'm never confident under it when the wind blows however!
Hope you get this sorted soon and you can get back to enjoying your new purchase
Ripsta is it a simple matter of using a drill to get the arch liner rivets removed? Any idea on drill size and is it just a matter of drilling in a little way?
Cheers
