Engine: T5: Disabling VVT ??

Hello,

I have an S60 on an 04 - its started to develop a knocking which increases as the revs do and its loud enough for me to think its serious. Sounds like its from the back left hand side of the head, although difficult to pin down exactly.

Have spoken to a local garage who have said that its a common fault and you can disable the VVT ( they didn't elaborate how ) and it still drives ok but without the noise - and presumably fixed timing.

I don't know enough to know whether this sounds likely or BS - anyone know ? ( and if it really is the case, how do you do it ! )

I wouldnt imagine you could just disable something like that without the engine management throwing a proper wobbly. I know mine doesnt like being told "no i dont want to" when the ecu tells it to do something lol

a garage "adjusted mine" when i had issues after a timing belt change. i then found out that they are pretty bullet proof and there was no issue at all with it. i then had to get a volvo dealer to then correct it and get it going right again. i would steer clear of anyone who reckons they can fix it by adjusting it.

and dont bother to use that "garage" again, cowboys,
you dont "disable" Variable Valve timing on an engine and have no problems, thats Pure 100% bulldust from them.
go find a volvo indi and get the VVT checked Properly, and replace it if needed.
if you dont, or you "disable" it,, your MPG will go down like the titanic, the engine wont be anywhere near as powerful, (so you will hoof it More to get the speed and use even more fuel) and When it finally goes "POP",, well it controls the Valve timing,, valves say hello to pistons,, wallet > intensive care for a Huge rebuild bill,,,,

ok thats fair enough, it didn't sound very likely in the first place, but you guys are the experts.

I find the complete ineptitude of some independant garages shocking ~ Disconnecting the valve timing is akin to cutting off your knob because your knee aches.. however, this does not surprise me as I took our V70 into an indi Volvo specialist who knew nothing about the driveshaft bolt issue. It's a jungle out there folks.....

Its possibly the exhaut vvt unit. mine went £250 for new one but turned out mine had more serious problems. i wouldn't drive it far because if it lets go your in trubble.
