Default I know, I know...winter tyres again!!!

You must be bored of this topic by now...apologies!

Looking at potential steel wheels and winter tyres for the V70 (2011) R-Design D5. I'm utterly confused...am looking at www.mytyres.co.uk

I enter car details and it ask me for the "car type", eg "400ccm 136 kW BJ.: 09.2002-06.2007". I have never come across this and have no idea what my "car type" is. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Am currently on 18" wheels, am assuming it's okay to go down to 16"? Local dealer tells me to use the same size (245/40/R18) but I'm not convinced.

Thanks chaps...

Can't see a place on that site where to put in the car details. Just enter the tyre sizes you need (however "BJ" means Baujahr and is German for Build date, ie MY2014. Also the KW (Kilowatt) is mainly used in Germany to measure effect/power, although bhp is becoming more popular to use).

You may find that wheels and tyres are cheaper (on special offer) at local dealer or Volvo UK. Check their homepage. They usually have something.

Your dealer is talking crap re size, ie he says that so he can sell bigger wheels to you..... According to Volvo you can use 16" wheels. Here in Germany they offer 16" "Oden" wheels with Dunlop 4D or Michelin A4 tyres for €1220 (that is £1032) including fitting etc so should not pay more than that!

Thanks NewVolvo

Sorry but there was a typo in the previous internet address, now corrected. Thanks for the explanation on the kW - that's helpful. Still, there doesn't appear to be a 205kW option available under "car type".

I guess I need to ring them. I enquired with Volvo last year and I was quoted something like £1200 but cannot recall what wheel size this was. On the above site, it seems I could get a complete set of 16" wheel and tyres with all expenses for under £700. Seems too good to be true.

But I'm unsure about what Volvo advises is permissible sizes. Think I need to call them again!

Thanks again.

Quick question on a vaguely related note - spotted these (which might be of some use for those looking for a cheap set of 17" alloys for a V70, XC70 or S80 for winter tyres) on eBay.

Can anybody confirm the pattern name ? I know they're the same design as used on Police specification vehicles, all I know is that they've never appeared in any of the catalogues I've seen (I recall some Volvo literature at the time claiming they were specifically strengthened).

I would double check wether 16inch wheels will fit before buying any. As far as I'm aware, there are 2 different front brake sizes for the phase 3 V70, 302mm and 316mm. I think the D5 and T6 used the latter and 16 inch wheels may not clear the calipers. There are 2 different sizes for 17 inch tyres/wheel combinations, 245/45R17 and 225/50R17. The latter will be the better option for winter tyres.

I personally have bought 245/40R18 winter tyres and whilst they are are considerable improvement over summer tyres, (I have a feeling the car would be pretty much undriveable in the snow summer tyres, much like my brothers Audi was on 235/45R17 tyres. That got stuck at the sight of the first flake of snow.),
they are not as good as cars I know which have used the same make and model tyre, but not as wide.

Volvo says: 16" Oden with 225/55R16 will fit the D5 & T6 (however, size 205/60R16 will NOT fit).

I'm waiting to fit my 225/50R17 winters to my 2012 D3 R Design. I bought some old 17" Volvo alloys off Ebay in the summer, going down a size saved quite a bit of dosh. Don't wait too long to order the tyres, as I've noticed the prices creeping up. My Nankangs are now £30 more than when I got them, thats a near 10% increase in 3 weeks!

What did you pay for the Nankings? Was it an online supplier?
