Timing belt: so it's not a volvo specialist job? That's a relief as I will get my garage/mechanic to do it - should be cheaper than Arnold Clark Inverness /Aberdeen lol
How much is the full kit?
Towbar: witter quoted about £500 fully fitted including " electrics" will a remap still be needed?
This is the one service if any to get done at the dealer!
Go on the Volvo service promise and that is what you will pay, AC Aberdeen tried to charge me 2hrs more (I had to quote the service promise price which they agreed) as they stated they loose money as its so time consuming to do it properly.
AC Aberdeen have really got there act together and do come and go with times and discounts.

Your Indy at a lower hr. rate will end up costing you more. I think the parts alone are about £350.

I hear mixed reports about inverness but Aberdeen have improved about 200% in the last 2 years. BTW I have not heard of any good indys up hear so if you have one please PM me the details.

Just checked my bill.

Hutton Brothers - £358 all-in for belts, tensioners etc, labour and VAT

TBH I have been so impressed with Hutton's that they are the only guys who work on my car now.

I'll do easy stuff myself (disks/pads etc) but the rest is done by them

Altho it's a long drive - I do this and combine it with a trip with work or social.

I live in Portsoy so I'm in between Aberdeen and Inverness. I use a mechanic in Ruthven was recommended by my mot garage( graham at knock garage)
I've heard there is an independent volvo specialist in Inverness but not looked into it.
All my volvo service history is from Barnets volvo dundee who seem quite reasonable but I'm not keen on the 4hr round trip!

I had a neighbour who would get all his services done for his audi a6 down in Middlesbrough/Newcastle which is a good 6-7 hrs away. He would fit them in with visits to family etc- he saved a fortune

To be honest I find that price just too cheap....the parts alone, if genuine, are just shy of £200 at a discounted rate. Were genuine parts used?

Yes - Genuine parts - I double checked - and they show the parts breakdown on the invoice.

Hutton Bros are THE guys for belt replacements on Volvo.
http://www.huttonbros.co.uk/

Mine's in there for a service on Tuesday (120,000 miles). They'll also do the MOT and a new battery whilst there.

I'm tying it in with a hillwalking trip over the weekend, and a work trip to Sheffield next week to make use of the journey

I have no relationship with Hutton's other than a happy customer. Tried other independants (and Arnold Clark Inverness where I bought the car) before finding Huttons (you will find Huttons recommended on a few Volvo forum sites).

The last Indie (apparently Volvo Specialist) I used (in Scotland) repeatedly overfilled the oil (causing the engine warning... I had to remove the sump plug and drain 0.5 litres after BOTH the services they did for me), and once put my front wheels back on the wrong way round, so a few days later it almost failed the MOT because the "direction of rotation" arrows were the wrong way. Now only use Huttons, and they've been spot-on.

I'm precious about my Volvo, owned from new, and now on 120k miles. I do a interim (autumn) oil/filter change myself, and also a gearbox oil change (see my Article http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=160569 )... I would not trust my Volvo to anyone I did not trust, or use non-genuine filters. Huttons do the "spring" service so it gets 2 oil/filter changes per annum (I do a lot of miles)

LOL - a bit off topic!!!

OK - I finished the Munros in 2003 (40th Birthday) and finished the Corbetts in 2013 (50th birthday). I guess you too are a Compleater?

I have 3 "Furth" Munros to do in Wales which I am planning for this weekend.

Around 80 Mounros into my 2nd round

I'm a bit hooked lol

Good luck with your "round"- how are you getting on???

The independent Volvo specialist in Inverness is Ian Cattanach http://www.usedvolvocars.co.uk/#1 he mainly does car sales but will do service work as well by arrangement. For the more in depth Volvo stuff he brings in another Volvo trained mechanic to assist. He services my XC70 annually and did my aux belt and tensioner last year at a fraction of the cost AC were quoting and he threw in a curtesy car for me for the day. Ian himself is a Volvo trained mechanic with a vast knowledge of the marque and used to work for AC before striking out on his own. He is worth having a word with, mention this Forum and he will look after you.
