Well, yet another 6 months with the S60R and not a hint of a problem. My advice would be to keep the car standard and service it on time. This is just one of the greatest and most enjoyable road cars out there. Overall average during the last two years is 29.4 MPG. I don't thrash it but I certainly use its performance. I love it!

I have no problem with my 03 R, had an 03 T5 before, depends what your after my opinion is the R is so much more of a car, mine is tuned, lowered, etc still no problems at all, love it.
As an aside, all cars will need suspension, hubs, etc replacing at some point, the R may seem like stuff breaks more - it's a heaveyer car so stuff may well do, all cars break! enjoy what you have, with only 201 in the country i'm proud i have a rare car.

These are great cars to own and drive as I am just starting to realise after 5 ish months of ownership. So I still have to replace the front struts (one is knocking) and two new tyres, but other than that I am more than happy with my Volvo.
I did not know there was only 201 of the R in the UK |

201? Seems relatively low? I know it wasn't massively popular, but really..?

It was a difficult sell, because of CO2 levels and poor predicted residuals there wasn't enough differential between the R and stuff like the M3 for high-end company car user/choosers or people looking for something to lease. That left Volvo with a market consisting mainly of private owners who really really wanted a 34 grand S60 and dealers taking demonstrators.
Lovely looking cars though, there's a gunmetal gray one I see regularly near to where I live, understated but purposeful. |

It finally broke
Ok, the S60R did finally go wrong. The dreaded collar gear broke as I was told it would before I bought the car in 2007. The good thing is that Riders Volvo in Truro fitted the later modified one that comes as a kit (31256246) for only £99. The total bill including labour oil and vat was £387. I have forgiven the car already as it is so good to drive. It was lethal in the snow when the rear wheels were not getting their drive though. I had to revert to the V70 2.5T and that was not bad at all. I still think the S60R is the bargain performance car of all time.

Forgot about this thread....
My S60R is currently working great. (Touch wood...this is why I insist on a solid oak coffee table) Had a garage bill of £1840 early December though :-( MOT needs to be done this week...........will see if that throws up anything |

Bottom line in my opinion is if you couldn't afford to run a 30 grand plus performance car when it was new then you probably can't afford to run a used one. Always budget at least 10% of the purchase price for first year maintenance (not including tyres and scheduled servicing) just in case and hopefully you'll be sorted.
I'm very aware that if something Alpina-specific fails on my B10 I could be looking at a big bill so I make sure I've got money in the bank to cover it. If I don't need to use it then great I'm building up some savings, if I do need it then it's there. I'd take the same approach if I was running an S60R as there are some R-specific bits which will cost a ton if they do fail. Cheers, John |

So an update
After spending £1840 in repairs just before xmas. It then passed the MOT in Jan. Had to get the Wheels Balanced and Wheel Alignment done end of Jan (£100 so won't complain). Now the slave cylinder has gone. £1750. Done 5 - 6000 miles since spending the £1840. |
