Oh as for fuel consumption I've just bought a Skoda Fabia tdi for running around in. 60mpg

It is not just the additives but also a longer warm up cycle that damages fuel consumption

I'm gonna give this thread a bump just because I'm unhappy with the mpg from my V70SE 2.0D manual.

3200 miles, 3 months old - just done a 400 mile round trip of which 360 were on motorways. Steady 70-80 mph, aircon off, and cruise on about 50% of the time.

What do I get for all my hard work? 39mpg !!!!!

I might be wrong for knocking this mpg and expecting too much but in my "weekend" car, a 2002 Vectra 3.2 V6 GSi, I can do the same run at 75mph max and still get 36mpg. No prizes for guessing which one is more fun in the twisties??

No other car I've had from new has given me such bad mpg. If Volvo had said 40mpg in their brochure, then I'd be content.

Volvo dealer here we come!

Vectra = Fun???? Really???

3200miles - might take a bit longer to get better - but worth having the codes read. I know with mine that at 65mph the fuel economy is bloody fantastic - but by the time it is cruising at 85mph it isn't.

cruising at 80 mph uses a LOT more fuel than 65 - 70 mph ... at those lower figures expect 50+ mpg ... put your instantaneous readout on and that will tell you where you are going wrong ...

Point taken about the increase in speed.

However, whilst on the CC @ 70mph on the M42, we hit a slight incline and the instanteneous mpg went from 49 to 28mpg in 6th gear. Personally I don't like trip computers but prefer the brim to brim method on re-fueling and calculate the mpg manually.

The volvo instant is a ballpark estimate - and it will get effected by hills - you never realise how much until you get hooked on the trip computer.

It took me a long time to learn that the D5 was economical when driven with a feather foot and at 65mph.

Don't have to worry about that anymore

I must say I am suprised with the fuel economy.
I used to drive a 2.0 TDi 140bhp Skoda Octavia DSG.

Now I have a V70 2.4D 175bhp Geartronic and it has now done 2,700 miles and the trip states 30.1mpg

I do about 10 minutes (while the engine is cold) on 30-40mph roads
by which time i would assume the car is 'warm'
followed by 10 minutes on the motorway at about 70-80mph
followed by 5-10 minutes on A Roads at 40-50mph

I must admit that I am finding that the economy of my new 58 plate S80 2.4D 163HP geartronic is very disappointing. After a few hundred miles of running around (admittedly it is cold and on winter diesel) I have an average of 26.1mpg! I hope on a run it will improve somewhat. This is with the higher pressure eco tyre pressures. It also has 35,000 on the clock so it run in before I got it!

Ironically it is giving a lower economy than my older XC90 163HP geartronic, which has been tuned to 205HP and only has the 5 speed gearbox! That returns somewhere around 29mpg running around, and over 36mpg on a motorway run. For a car which is 200kg heavier and 4WD it does make me wonder what the Euro IV emissions has done to the engine compared to the older Euro III?

Has anyone tuned their engines to see if that improves the economy by much? For the XC90 it gave a 10-15% increase in fuel economy with better mpg.

I had a 2004MY V70 D5 (163bhp) manual and took it from 4 miles to just under 80,000 miles and got mostly mid to high 40's, and once over about 40,000 that went up to low 50's mpg ( not on the computer done the old fashioned way). It never seemed to do less than about 45, even with the wife driving in commuter traffic and regularly on a long run from essex to cumbria we saw 55 fully laden with 2 x dogs & associated clobber.
Last year changed to a 2007.5MY XC70 D5 (185) manual ( last of the old shape) and although its now only got c.20,000 miles we get a fairly reasonable 38 to 40, and the long runs about 48. Not bad really considering the size and weight of both the cars.
I also have a saab 93 estate 150bhp TDi and can never seem to get more than 40-43 .
