Default Automatic Issue?

Hi all - so car is a V70 D5 Se Sport 08 plate. I have noticed that when in traffic when I brake to a stop the car shudders or jumps just after it comes to a standstill. Im guessing this is the automatic transmission doing something rather than the brakes - but its rather annoying. Feels like it disengages with a small clunk/jump.

Its more noticeable when im in traffic as its stop start - but I guess it happens everytime the car brakes to a stop.

Any thoughts what this could be?

Regards
Jim

if I were you, I would do a transmission fluid change ASAP... See what the existing fluid is like...
Once you have dumped some fluid, check the colour

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the advice - has anyone else had the same issue - and did a fluid change fix the issue?

One way of describing it would be like braking on gravel

If the gearbox oil hasn't been replaced, then almost certainly such an exchange will improve shifting quality.
I've replaced the oil twice in my automatic gearbox, and both times gearshift quality improved. In spite of the old oil not being ruined at all, just a bit darker (dirtier) than new oil is.

So I agree. If it hasn't been done recently, start with that.

I don't think it shifts to neutral, but might be shifting to 1st. Definitely do a gearbox oil change.

These cars did indeed shift into neutral at standstill, to save some fuel. But many customers didn't like it, so it was a standard issue to remove this feature by a software update in conjunction with a service. But if the car hasn't been serviced by a Volvo dealer, this may not have been done. Or rejected, for some reason.

Change the ATF.

It's not that difficult. I've just done it.

There's a thread in the other xc70 v70 section

Volvo added a "neutral control" feature the the earlier AW55 which became standard on the TF-80 where if the car is stationary, up to temperature and in D with you foot on the brake it will shift the box into neutral - but this does not happen immediately, usually 10-15 seconds after stopping.

On a healthy gearbox this is usually undetectable to the driver.

As others have said a fluid change is the first and only place to start.
