Apologies, Canis & Jon, when you guys mentioned the intermittent rattling I immediately thought of the VVT solenoid doing its brrr...tick...brrr...tick party piece.

Sludge could very well be blocking the oil pick-up in the sump and the only way of knowing is to drop the oil and either get an endoscope in there or remove the sump entirely for a proper look..

When was the oil last changed, if you don't mind me asking, and was a quality (OEM) filter used? It's most likely a paper type filter and I've seen poor quality filters collapse on themselves (mainly due to serious lack of service). First thing I would do is check and change both filter and engine oil.
