Default s40 2004 fuel pump? problem

hi

i'm hoping someone here might be able to help me.
My s40 04 petrol is losing power in 4th and 5th occasionally, put my foot down and it just won't accelerate. has gone away so far after turning the engine off for a while.

Also the fuel gauge didn't move after putting atenner in the other day till i got about 5 miles down the road and stopped for a bit and turned the engine on again.
bought it 2 months ago and to be honest i've been running the fuel pretty low, i know it's best not to..i'm wondering from googling whether the fuel pump is going? i'm going to fill it next week and see if the problem keeps on with a full tank.
does it sound like a pump problem?

thanks
matt

My guess would be some crud in the tank that's getting sucked against the mesh filter that's on the bottom of the fuel pump and sender assembly in the tank, my t4 does it, but once turned off for a few seconds anything that's been sucked against it falls away once the pump switches off and it's then ok again, this is how mine looked before I cleaned it, although I have missed some sediment out of the bottom of the tank as mine still does it very occasionally, I need to do it again.
