My caliper looks like this one. Does that mean I have 316mm discs? Does the caliper for the 300mm discs look different?

(It's a V70 2011 D3 ES)

(Standard spec wheel size is 16" but I bought this as a factory order and specified 17" wheels as new)

The new pads had a slightly different size friction lining to the old ones. The new ones are Volvo 30793857, but I've just checked my service record and the last replacement ones were 30648385 according to my receipt.

The new ones have gone in and seem to fit, but took 3 or 4 miles to bed and for the pedal to firm up.

So my new question is: have I got the right new pads or did Volvo fit the wrong ones last time?

Here's a pic of the disc, note the width of the unworn/rusty part on the inner side of the disc. does that look normal?
Looks as though the olds ones were for the previous xc70/v70 - classed as 15"/16" on volvopartswebstore.com

I don't know if the calipers look the same or not but mine looks similar to this and I have the 316mm discs. For what it's worth the base equipment model of my D4 comes with 16" wheels so I don't think the inch nomenclature when talking brake size is that exact these days with modern alloy wheels. Seems to be a historical thing or perhaps when talking about steel wheels ( eg like many people use for their winter tyres).

Can't you just measure your discs. Just eyeball a couple of pencils or something placed against the rim of the disc against a ruler on the outside of the wheel. 16mm is quite significant a difference.

Just use a small prybar, big screwdriver between the outside pad and the caliper cross bar and gently push/pull.

I am not a professional mechanic but I have only ever found the need for windback tools if there is a mechanical handbrake on the same caliper.

Update:

So, Volvo dealer parts department have this morning confirmed my discs are 316mm. They've also confirmed the correct pads are part number 30793857, and that fitting pads with part number 30648385 is incorrect.

So, basically Volvo fitted the wrong pads to my car 4 years ago. A new set of the correct pads will not now sit well on the existing discs because the wrong pads are slightly smaller and have worn the discs on a smaller area, leaving wider lips on the outer and inner edges.

I now have no option than to get new discs and another set of new pads (as the correct pads I've just fitted will have been damaged in the few miles I got them to bed in.)

What reparation would you seek from the Volvo dealer?

How much do you want their help in the future ?

Wrong bits fitted 4 years ago, your brakes worked fine and you had no problems, sir.

Did you ask for bits for your car or use the part number of the existing parts ?
We supplied what you asked for sir.

In an ideal world mistakes would not be made, however we live in the real world.

As you were happy before you knew the wrong pads were fitted and presumably the car passed mot in the 4 years since they were fitted why not just run what you have until disks require renewal and then fit the correct parts.

Paul.

Show the dealer the problem and emphasise you now have to prematurely replace brake components due to their mistake.
Ask for the parts to be replaced foc, it's the least you can expect.

Paul, absolutely agree with you on all those points:

The car has only ever been serviced by that Volvo dealer since new in 2010, as well as all MOTs and warranty work. I also referred 2 family members to them for regular work and servicing. Changing the pads on Friday was the first time I or anyone else has ever worked on the car.

TBH I've always had a great relationship with them, first name terms on both sides. I'll see how mortified they are by their mistake when they call on Monday and take it from there. My hope/expectation is they'll be truly apologetic and offer to replace front discs and pads FOC as a minimum (as luggsey says), and do the rears too as a gesture of goodwill.

If they don't meet my minimum, and/or god forbid they decide to argue it's been ok for 4 years then I'll be getting cross.

Ultimately I'm surely within my rights to request a refund on the pads they incorrectly supplied and fitted. That cost me £172.40. For that money I can get OEM pads and discs and fit them myself, meaning overall new pads and discs will have only cost me the £60 I paid for the pads last week.

Car going to dealers this week for new discs, at their expense, and pads if necessary.
