Default weird starting

I've had loads of volvos over the years but this xc70 d5 is doing my box in.

every so often it will just refuse to start. I first thought it was the battery as it was totally unsuitable .Then it ran ok for a few weeks perfectly though it was always slow to fire. Then it wouldn't start and flattened the new battery after multiple attempts. So I checked the fuel pump (lift pump from tank) was pumping fuel which it appeared to be fine. I bought and fitted a new fuel fitter after i'd found its location. Again its been fine for around 4 weeks even starting a little better occasionally but then today nothing battery exhausted trying to start it. I've read loads of info but can't figure it out. I cant find the fuel pump relay to check it as its not marked on the fuse panels.

Injectors? Glow plugs?

Have you had the fault codes checked?

Is it EURO 3 or does it have DPF?

How old is it, and what colour is the engine cover? Black is euro3 silver is euro 4.

How many miles has it done, and what does the fuel gauge show when it won’t start?

With other diesels, this can be camshaft position and/or crankshaft position sensors

Check the earth strap from below the starter to just behind the n/s headlight. At a similar mileage mine parted company with the lug at the bottom end.

The engine turns over fine so i assume if the earth strap was off it wouldnt spin. Come to think I had a 760 that used to intermittently fail to turn over and that was the earth strap was loose .
thanks
