Default 740GL Auto Estate FREE! (Spares / Repair)

My trusty old 740 has come to the end of the road, I reckon, but before I call out the scrap man, I'm offering it on here free of charge.

It's a 1987 E-reg 740GL Auto estate with 128K miles on the clock. It has the 2 litre fuel injected engine and 3 speed + overdrive auto box. The bodywork is reasonably tidy although the lacquer is deteriorating in places - particularly on the roof. The interior is good apart from the headlining and cracks in the top of the dashboard.

It starts, runs and drives well and all electrics are okay apart from the driver's heated seat. It had a reconditioned automatic transmission in 2008 and has done only 19,000 miles since. It has had regular oil changes and has been 100% reliable. It also had a new battery last year and a replacement exhaust section. The tyres are good with plenty of tread. I've owned it for 11 years and it only had one former keeper (and a healthy service history).

Now the bad news. I took it for its MOT pre-check with my local mechanic, and he says it needs at least: welding round the jacking points, some on the main chassis rail, bushes on the steering and brake shields. Also the steering rack is worn and may need replacement soon. It also needs a replacement thermostat (which I had already bought) and there is vibration from the front brakes. He advised me to scrap it! Please note there may be other faults which he has missed.

I have just put it onto SORN and the MOT expired last Friday, so if anyone wants it for parts or to repair, please come and fetch it FREE OF CHARGE! You'll obviously need a trailer, or presumably trade plates to be legal. It's located near Bromsgrove, not far from J1 M42 or J4 M5. No scrap dealers, please!

Thanks! Neil.

That all sounds quite fixable to someone mechanically inclined. I'd be up to the task if I was closer, considering the extremes I go to keep going our V40 on the road. I hope somebody takes advantage of your generosity and gets them and their family some transport. Love the 740.

Thank you for the replies! A forum member has been in touch and is coming to look at the car with a view to taking it, so hopefully it will either be repaired or a useful source of spares.

Neil.

Thank you again to all who have replied. I'm pleased to say the 740 has been collected today by a forum member and I have been told it will be repaired and back on the road in due course.

A big relief for me as I don't have the ability to fix it myself (welding, anyway!) or the room to keep it long term and I really didn't want to see it going off on the back of a scrapper's truck, after owning it for so long!

All the very best, Neil.

Too late now , but it is always cheaper to fix what you have rather than get another car as long as you are not giving up driving of course , glad it will be fixed ...
