Volvo did tests with the walnut shell treatment about 9 years ago but it proved to be of little or no help ..

It worked a treat on mine. Volvo told me that the eratic idle was a massive problem involving almost £2500 in parts alone! It went in to Mitsubishi and started to descibe the simptoms and what Volvo told me and they just laughed. Several Volvo owners had been told the same and it was a running joke in the Mitsubishi dealer network. I had a wallnut blast, 60k service, new belts and brake pads all around for under £600 and the problem went away.

Interesting that Volvo want to second guess Mitsubishi on the engine that they had no involvement in designing and appear to have no knowledge of at a dealer level.

Do Mitsubishi get the same problems on their cars with GDI i wonder .?

Dribbling injectors on early models causing rough idle and emission problems at MOT , Siezing throttle flap spindles , The infamous carbon build up in the inlet ports which doesnt cause many symptoms , Cam followers failing causing tapping , ( cured for SJ engines)
Throttle ECU's failing , Siezing gear linkage bell cranks , Gearbox Syncromesh problems .

I don't see why they would behave any diferently, the only difference is the name on the plastic cover. Same clutch and gearbox as well.

I found this thread and could not resist resurrecting it for new folks who bought one, they are not bad when they work.

I love my gdi I've just gotten home from a 1850 mile road trip in the car and it was the only car that didn't have its bonnet open at all over the whole trip (other cars 2 bmw e46 and one 2015 Ford fiesta)

I guess you were extremely lucky. You should play the lottery this weekend....

As for the other cars, what else would you expect from an E46 and a Fuuuuuuuuurd? lol

Kidding aside, as I have said before it is a great engine, very smooth and efficient when everything is ok and mainly when car is pushed and revved a bit more than usual. The thing I hate about these models is that when something goes wrong, it can be an absolute PITA to get it sorted, as it it can be very baffling and unpredictable.
