Sold my GDI yesterday as I've bought a Subaru Legacy which is more about fulfilling a childhood promise to myself about owning a 4x4 than anything else...
The GDI has been absolutely brilliant. The entire car has been absolutely brilliant. If I could have found a localish 04 plate GDI in very tidy condition I would probably have bought another one instead of the Legacy. They're really quite fun to drive given their revy-ness, and yet the fuel usage and tax-bracket is very pocket friendly. Don't fear the GDI! And goodbye to all the lovely, helpful V/S40 owners! Adam

Gd1 v40
I have had my 2001 1.8i GDi for the last two and a half years, 184000 now and I am well pleased, I have replace all springs that had broken due to pot holes, repaired rear brake callipers, new clutch flexi pipe, new headlight adjusters, new drop links and I am getting 39 to the gallon, I have had the V40 2000cc but had to scrap it due to rust and I would have preferred that size engine, if my car lasts another year I will be happy because they are only worth scrap value now for my year

Just back from a run from Inverness to Nice and back in my 2003 GDI (Inverness to Folkestone is the same as Calais to Aix en Provence). Covered 3511 miles at an average of 39.5 mpg and only problem was a brake light bulb that blew 30 miles from home on the way back. I think this is the sixth year that this V40 has made the trip. Thought I would turn up the 200,000 on the way back, but not quite.

No engine issues with my 2003 V40 1.8i GDI which has done over 180K miles.
The only problems are what I consider to be reasonable expected weaknesses / issues for the S40 / V40 range in general; - electrics (particular bug bear, headlights, bulb replacements & heating thermistor), - suspension issues (probably due to potholes & speed humps), - door handle replacement. - front tyre wear above average in my opinion. But in terms of its era the GDI engine has been absolutely fine. |

I own a 2002 V40 1.8 GDI and had the Coking issue but the Throttle Body also needed replacing. Some info about these GDI Engines I have found is here.
The 4G93 is a 1.8L (1834 cc) engine available in both SOHC and DOHC versions. Turbocharged variants are also produced. In mid 1996 Mitsubishi released a gasoline direct injection (GDI) version of the 4G93. This GDI model saw a production of over a million units though it was a heavy polluter therefore only sold in the Japanese market. A partially cleaned up version (with less power) was later sold in Europe, and was among the first of the modern GDI engines. It brought good fuel economy and, if well serviced, long engine life. 4G93 DOHC 16 Valve GDI Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Total Displacement - 1834cc Bore - 81.0mm Stroke - 89.0mm Compression Ratio - 12.0:1 Maximum Output - Europe: 88 kW (120 PS; 118 bhp) @ 5,250 rpm / 90 kW (122 PS; 121 bhp) @ 5,500 rpm / 92 kW (125 PS; 123 bhp) @ 5,500 rpm Japan: 96 kW (131 PS; 129 bhp) @ 5,500 rpm / 96 kW (131 PS; 129 bhp) @ 6,000 rpm / 110 kW (150 PS; 148 bhp) @ 6,500 rpm Maximum Torque - Europe: 174 N⋅m (128 ft⋅lbf) @ 3,500 rpm / 174 N⋅m (128 ft⋅lbf) @ 3,750 rpm Japan: 181 N⋅m (133 ft⋅lbf) @ 3,500 rpm / 177 N⋅m (131 ft⋅lbf) @ 3,750 rpm / 178 N⋅m (131 ft⋅lbf) @ 5,000 rpm These engines have a Power and Economy Mode depending on how much you are pushing the car, it's abit like Mivec / VTEC but electronic and to do with fuel injection. (See owners manual for more info) Originally, the 4G93 (1.8) was designed for Turbocharging, hence the complicity of the engine itself and why tuning is difficult with them. These 4G93 GDI Engines are part of the Mitsubishi 4G9 Series where there were engines ranging from 1.5L to 2.0L. (4G91,4G92,4G93,4G94) Hope this all helps you learn more about these engines. |

I had to replace my drivers door handle, the chrome ones seem to be prone to this! Not heard of the other black plastic ones breaking much though. Looking at my cars MOT History your point of tyre wear seems to persist throughout.

I actually have never seen or heard of anyone saying that they broke their black handle. Chrome ones are made of a much more inferior plastic and are quite easy to brake.
