I once read somewhere that that you need to modify the bell housing, since the Redblocks are slanted, and the gearbox will sit at an odd angle if you attach it to a B20/30. Whatever the case, I know it's been done, but I figure it would be a lot of work though. An overdrive would be priceless though.

It's a nice idea.

I haven't done this, so I'm speculating. If the AW71 does bolt up to the B30 (albeit at the wrong angle) then correcting things shouldn't be too difficult - as long as you can find the right person to modify the bellhousing.

Basically it would need to be sliced in two at a point where it's circular, than rotated the correct amount, then welded back up ensuring everything stays square and the overall length turns out the same.

Certainly not a DIY job for the beginner, but no big deal for a competent engineer experienced at working with aluminium.

this guy from the netherlands did the job several times by putting two bellhousings together to fit B30egine to AW71. http://www.hukebasart.nl/huke/. He ONLY does this. But he will send you some adresses an tel.no. from customers who did your swap. Some dutch guy near Rotterdam. Sorry, I lost his deatils. Was very substantial, friendly. Partslist was endless.

another solution is to put a aluminium adapter-plate between cut(?) b30-bell and aw71. some guy in my town did this in his 1800ES, but isn´t satisfied. custom made aircraft-certified-alu-adapter cost a fortune, whole system is incontinent and he has some electrical problems...

decided against this swap in my `72 164E, cause it´s far too complicated and expensive. wanted to replace my BW35-autobox for something more strong and reliable. now swapped to M400-manual. simple 3hr-job- plug and play.

due to much torche, it´s still an "automatic" feeling, driving in 3rd gear.

Yes you can! - and what's needed is on the shelf here in Denmark..

Adapter specifically for exchanging the BW with the AW - nothing more required - price is roughly arround GBP 324.

Who are they??.. I honestly have never heard that saying before..

Well, I can't help that the World still isn't small enough for a bag of rice, hour of labour, 4 tires for a Volvo - or a handmade machined special niche market item to cost the same all over the World..

To put in perspective: The GBP 324 corresponds to apr./roughly the price of 4 M&S Michelin 165/65 R15 tires.. or 275 cans of Coca Cola or 32 regular Big Mac menu's here in Denmark..
