Visual ID of Which Diesel Unit
Sorry, could not find an answer in search facility .....
Is there an easy way to identify the 2.4D/D5 units in the later cars, (think it is post 2005MY). My understanding is: D5 upto 2004/5 have dark grey cover = 163bhp D5 post 2004/5 have light grey cover = 185bhp However, is the light grey cover specific to 185bhp or specific to E4. I see dealers advertise (>2005) cars as 163bhp with pictures of light grey engine cover and had always assumed that this colour signified a 185bhp unit ? Thus, if both post 2005 variants, 163 (2.4D) and 185 (D5) have the same colour engine cover - how do you visually tell them apart. You may have guessed, looking for a quick test in the engine bay as do not always have access to tracing VIN and vehicle badge deletion exists, etc Additionally, anyone know if the 6-speed manual is specific to D5 or is it also used in the 2.4D. Advice appreciated |

My understanding is that the light grey engine cover and 6 speed box is specific to the 185bhp engine.

The six speed box is used in both the 2.4D and D5 boxes on the revised 2.4 diesel engine.
As to whether the light grey cover is unique to the 185, I don't know. See: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/press/vo...lprod_spec.pdf To be certain, you can always phone Volvo and ask them which engine a particular car is fitted with.

163/185
163 has a black engine cover, 185 are predominantly silver/light gray.
Will try to find some pics. Paul. Pic 163 in a V70 will try to find one for 185.

Just to confirm, The lighter grey cover is a 185 engine, but the six speed gearbox is available on 185 and euro 4 163 engines

It is complicated , the light grey cover is usualy the 185 BUT the 163 after 2005 also has a light grey cover . The designation D5244T ( 163 bhp) is printed on the timing cover of a D5244T4 (185 bhp) version too to make it more confusing ! the only sure way is get the dealer to look up the specification on their internal volvo system which lists the engine correctly as a D5244T (163) or a D5244T4 ( 185 ).
Having said that it is fairly obvious which one you have when you drive it ..
