Default Swirl flap advice

Hi,

I'm trying to give a 2007 100k miles S40 D5 a bit of TLC. I've so far changed the leaky AC Condensor and the glow plugs. There's a list of things which need doing.

The one that has caught my attention is that the swirl flap linkage keeps dropping off, and there's quite a bit of oil/sludge on the side of the head where the arm for the swirl flaps pivots out of.

After going through VIDA, it seems straight forward as it looks as I'll have to remove the injectors, however, the part where I'm needing advice is where it states "Note! Make sure that new components are installed". Looking at the images, I'll have to replace the mounting kit for the injectors as well as the high-pressure pipes that goto the injectors.

Has anyone fixed the linkage and the oil leak without spending £££'s? I've already paid for the swirl flap kit, but I didn't realise the other costs which would be involved after going through VIDA.

I have another question; whether I use the existing or new high-pressure fuel pipes, I'll have to torque them up... I see that Volvo have a special tool for that, I only have crows foot spanners, how do I apply the correct torque without spending a fortune on special tools? Also, my VIDA shows the torque for stage 1, but stage 2 is a bit of a mess, see image attached.

This isn't the first diesel I've worked on and I've previously done swirl flaps on BMW's which are simple in comparison! But it is the first diesel I'm potentially going to be messing about with injectors. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

T

Hi, hope this is the correct thread? Please can you help? I'm running an "07 V50 (Petrol Manual). After a service with an independent Volvo garage, the next day the Engine management warning lamp, lit up and the error code read, "P2008: Intake manifold runner control circuit open bank 1a". Then driving to work, the warning lamp went out & the car worked as it should. Returning from work yesterday, the warning lamp came back on as I was driving slowly in traffic. Do I suspect the solenoid, the link-arm or the swirl-flaps. The car has always been serviced at the appropriate intervals, the milage is 96k. Thanks for your help, Kev.

I've just done the swirl solenoids on mine a couple of months ago. 1.8 petrol 2008 eml code. I was getting 28 mpg, code coming on every few days etc. MPG is a steady 33.3 onboard computer. Solenoids are reasonably cheap and a 10 minute job to fit. Lift engine cover off, they are on right hand side of engine at top. Four screws, two electrical connectors and four vacuum pipes. Hardest part is the screws as you have to unclip a few cables etc to get to them. I am on same mileage as you.
