Just a quick update.

The other week I went to a Volvo specialist. He analysed the computer and he said that there were no errors/warnings. I described the symptoms as above and he noted that it sounded like pollution of the car and recommend using higher grade fuel (like Shell V-Power Diesel). In the meanwhile he recommended additives. As a permanent solution, he recommend and engine cleaning and update of the ECM so that the EGR is never opened again.

Its going to the dealer next week and they promised me to do some more in depth diagnosis. In the meanwhile, it sounds like this from the engine bay: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ycW...w?usp=drivesdk

The click - click of something followed by the dip and recovery of RPMs is quite noticeable.

Did you get any joy from the Volvo dealer? Or was it just an expensive trip to tell you "No Warning Lights - its fine"

On a further note, the performance of my car is way off from where it should be.

According to Parkers, my car should be 0-60 7.4 seconds (2015 VEA d4 181).... on the most recent journey I was joining a motorway, I ended up having a drag race from a set of lights against a 2004 Jag x-Type 2.0d (0-60 for that was 9.5 seconds) and I only just managed to edge him in the sprint to the motorway despite the fact I was trying to see if some italian tuning would help with the dodgy running.

So only just being able to out drag a car over what was essentially a standing quarter mile, that should be over 2 seconds to 60 slower than me represents a massive fall off in performance

Just had a phonecall from the local volvo stealers, and apparently it is a clogged EMAP Pipe which needs replaced at a cost of £250.

What is the chance that this is related to the EGR Cooler and other associated pipework which has cauased issues in the past?

Those are on the intake side, the EMAP pipe is on the exhaust side.

Any goodwill from Volvo UK if the dealer bothers to press them? This is not an unknown problem

I have contacted Volvo UK for some input, and the dealer have said they will do the same.

Zebster, yes the EGR and intake manifold are on the intake side of the engine, but the issue is soot, and soot is a byproduct of the combustion process.... my point is that this engine variant has always had the issue of soot buildup, that the later AdBlue engines don't, therefore there is an inherent flaw with the design of this engine variant which they (Volvo) have acknowledged in the past. And remedied in later models by using AdBlue

Maybe. I'm not sure whether the AdBlue-reliant models do actually have fewer soot problems? It certainly won't help the exhaust side, as AdBlue isn't a soot reduction solution but obviously the use use of AdBlue then requires a lower EGR volume to satisfy the NOx limit, which I'd assume would help avoid intake soot problems.

The saga continues. Yesterday I drove the car 90 miles, all seemed fine, then after I started the return journey within about 30 seconds I had a reduced engine performance tortoise appear and the car kangarooed down the road for about a mile before I had to stop, after I restarted the engine the reduced performance message was still there and the car was nigh on undriveable for a couple of minutes before the tortoise disappeared and the car was fine again. But no EML appeared.

Booked in to local dealer in 2 weeks. Not confident on driving driving it any distance

Have you no way to check for stored (or pending) trouble codes using an OBD2 reader?
