Fuel economy
I was going to do a mpg rant thread, till i did some research.....
I expected the diesel version to be a lot better over the say T5, i nearly bought an S40 T5 (800 quid cheaper) and saw that the MPG was about 32 i think it was, so i opted for the diesel and estate model, as ya do, assuming the latter would be much better on fuel, rookie mistake . Having come from a 04 Laguna 1.9DCi that returned 42mpg on short'ish runs and i never had Miss Daisy in the back either, it would do 51mpg if i had to ferry her about, hence she walked I know the Laguna is mostly plastic or some other light material so it does have that going for it but 08 (Mk III) model is heavier and returned about the same, had one, prefered the MkII. For a 10mpg drop is quite a lot in my book, yeah, taking is steady on the same runs, im getting 33/32mpg, but thats with driving like Morgan Freeman, with maybe the odd tickle cause lets face it, its hard not too, but its still a big shock when i could get about the same with a T5 with the same driving style with a tad more get up and go, not to mention the cost of petrol vs diesel too, I did have the C70 T5 GT (think it was GT) and the S70 T5 and i do miss that oomph lol

V70 auto 2006 D5 163hp , I do what I consider a pretty varied road style 600 a week which works out just short of a tank full , it is week in my 4 weeks of ownership has been my best with a tank average of 49.7 mpg , my lowest was a tank average of 42 mpg , motorway driving it seems to do around 60 mpg , in traffic and minor roads I don’t have a real figure yet but must be around 40 mpg, the boot is always full with tool boxes

My V70 163 D5 auto consumption also varies...around town it sells in at 33mpg, urban cruising will achieve 38, but not yet done any motorway to get a higher mpg.....but I do use a fuel addative to help keep the system clean, as I do appreciate short journeys do add to the egr clag!

I use a dpf cleaner addative, you just add a measured amount in to the fuel tank, then just drive as normal, it just lowers the burn temp of the fuel so burns out the debris so to speak. same goes for the "fuel system treatments", they work similar way, plainly speaking. theres loads of brands to choose from, but the majority do the same things, but for whats its worth, ive always used "Forte" products.

Over the years there have been many mpg threads here. Quick run down imhp
Diesel 163 bhp diesel most economical 185bhp least economic diesel 205bhp a bit better than 185bhp 215 a bit better than the 205.bhp New 4 pot not avail as p2 Petrol 140+170 similar to each other perhaps 15 mpg less economic than 163bhp diesel. 2.5T+T5 about 5mpg less than 140 bhp AWD R 5mpg less than T5 Auto''s approx 5-10 mpg less than manual and in my opinion is biggest factor in economy stakes. All engines loose significant Mpg if you cane them...meaning you can run a 2.5T light footed almost as economically as the 185bhp diesel esp if petrol is manual and diesel Auto. Just my thoughts....
