Default Blown Turbo - Advice needed

Hi all.

The day has finally come and the turbo has pretty much let go. Last 2 weeks it's been making the telltale whistling almost siren sort of noise but continued to function as normal. I knew it needed looking at so had a slot booked in my usual garage for a few weeks time but yesterday it lost power. Still drives and doesn't smoke but its like driving on 0 boost.

My question is do people have advice on the best place to get another turbo? I'm not willing to get just a 2nd hand one as there's always potential for it too to be faulty or not have much life left in it, and dont really want to pay full whack from a dealer.

Are refurbished turbos worth the money? Does anyone have experience with any particular companies?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Craig
There's a firm called Cats & Carbs UK Ltd that will refurb your turbo, Check their website Telephone01782392202.

Unusual for a diesel turbo unit to actually fail unless its been starved of oil, usually when they 'let go' it opens up a direct oil feed supply into the inlet tract and the engine will rev out to destruction.

In your case there could be just a boost leak, hence the siren sound, and the ECU has finally disabled boost as its getting unexpected readings back from the various sensors.

Best to get the ECU fault log read and interpreted I think.

Check the boost pipes for signs of leaks, especially the boost pipe to and from the intercooler. It sounds like a boost pipe has slowly worn or blown off.
When a turbo is failing you should see blue smoke out of the exhaust under load, as you are not seeing this it may not be the turbo unit.

Recon turbos should have a 12 month warrenty, if a recon is going to fail it will quite quickly! Generally they are only replacing the bearings, oil seals, impeller shaft and blades and are machine shop experts. Recons from a company with good feedback should be safe to use.

Get the spanners out before spending a couple of hunderd pounds on part swapping,
