Default Excessive hissing from turbo

My xc90 momentum is 2 months out of warranty, only done 27k in 3 yrs.

Over this weekend it has developed a very loud hiss every time revs get about 1500 and turbo kicks in. I know the turbo is hiss is pretty nosy anyway on this car, more than previous turbo deisels I've owned, but this is on another level.

Sounds like the gas coming out of a bottle of pop on the passenger side, but so loud pedestrians are looking at the car. Worried it's the beginning of turbo failiure, or possibly just a loose hose. Plan is to call volvo tomorrow to get it looked at, but my concern is I am going to end up with a bill. Fortunately I took out the extended warranty so anything big should covered

I had a similar issue a couple of months back although the car did go into limp mode, Volvo assist came out and diagnosed a hole in the intercooler hose.
Don't know about the cost as it was covered under warrant, the part had to come from Sweden so I had a hire car for 4 days.

Had a similar sound on my D5. Twice. First time they said it was the pipe from the compressor to the turbo.
Second time was only ten days after the first repair and they said that a nut had come loose, but I suspect that they hadn't tightened a pipe from the turbo and it had come loose, or even blown off a joint.

Has not recurred since. First repair took a few days for parts to arrive. Second repair only took a couple of hours.

Buy Volvo's extended warranty for another three years. Negotiate the price down, even though it sounds like good value anyway.

Just been out tonight and gut feel says loose connection on a pipe where gas is escaping. I had a similar issue on a golf deisel a long time ago and that was straight after it came back from the dealer - it turned out they hadn't tightened one of the connnections between turbo intercoler

Will report back on fault after volvo take a look, and the cost!

I remember when you had this and a few others too but as the OP's car is out of warranty so over 3 years old it wont have the power pulse fitted.

I think you will find it is a split turbo hose down on the left side of the radiator at the bottom . It is not too big a cost as far as motoring costs go these days ...

I did wonder whether he had Power Pulse. In which case the diagnosis is narrowed and top of the list is either a punctured or loose connection between the turbo and the inlet manifold somewhere. There's a lot of fairly large plumbing on these small twin-turbo engines, so there must be quite a few joints in the pipes and hoses where there is a potential for leaks.

Honestly, with a car as complex as this, I'd buy an extra few years worth of warranty.
I very very recently swapped my five year old 75,000 mile Honda CR-V 2.2 diesel for a three year old diesel with nine speed automatic and 32,000 miles on the clock. One of the things that gave me the confidence to do the deal was the availability of three years extra of factory warranty with the same terms as a new car's warranty, for only £500. Now £500 doesn't pay for many repairs on today's cars and even though I had absolutely zero issues on the old one from new, the warranty gives me complete piece of mind.

Not sure what the cost of an extended warranty for a Volvo is, but most are transferrable to a new owner should it be sold before the warranty expires and even if it cost £333/year I would still consider it worthwhile, especially if like the Honda's it includes recovery and rescue services.

As you stated it was one of the first generation XC90s so no powerpulse. I don't know what a split hose sounds like but I'd be pretty confident it sounds like this.

I bought the Volvo 2 year (the longest I was offered) extended warranty which is actually a Car Care product. I've never had an extended warranty before so I didn't know if they worked like insurance, in terms of having a limit to the number of claims/ size of claim - as in small problem you may as well pay out vs big problem claim on the warranty.

Plus does anyone know if you do make a claim via warranty and I was without the car for several days, if the warranty would also cover the cost of a courtesy car?

I guess I'll have to get it into the dealer first to establish the problem. However having just spoken to them they can't get the car in until next Tuesday, so fingers crossed it doesn't fail on me between now and then. I certainly won't be doing any long journeys this week.
